Hi Beautiful Fire Hoopers!
I've just started fire hooping, and I'm wondering what tricks you would recommend. I know there are some moves that should not be attempted with a fire hoop (I read a list of these in a previous thread). But I'm hoping you can tell me which tricks are great ones for fire hooping. I think the 'float up' and continuous float up/ float down tricks looks good. Obviously, waist and leg hooping works well with fire. I attempted some off body movements last night, but the fire was a little too close for comfort for me. Specifically, I was trying to get the hoop from an isolation back to my waist and had a nerve-wracking moment.
So, I'm wondering if you could recommend a few tricks to start off with. Which ones work well with fire?

Re: Recommended Tricks for New Fire Hoopers
Sun, February 24, 2008 - 9:55 AMThere are a lot of tricks you can do (and there are some out there, specifically "Megan the Cat" that does virtually everything with a fire hoop that she does with a reg hoop) What I recommend is that when your burn is almost done, & your flame is low, then try some off the body moves. I wear cotton arm covers (covering the elbows especially!) to be also to hold the hoops itself & not burn myself.
Since we don't have standard names for moves that everyone knows, it's hard for me to suggest specific moves. But here goes:
-Poi (figure 8's side to side)
-Lasso (floating hoop up & down)
-Behind the back! (bending forward)
-Wheel (illusion that the hoop is turning in a stationary position in front of you)
-Jumps!! (try when the flame is low)
-Galaxy spin (elbow covers a must for this one! Hoop's off your body & u twist the hoop while spinning it around your center)
-Hoop in hand & drop into a backbend! (keep up the yoga classes for that one) and with that said, you can take almost any pose with the hoop in your hand..... and then there's foot hooping!! (I think the most dangerous move while laying on your back)!
I hope that helps! If you're ever in NYC we can spin on my roof! -

Thu, February 28, 2008 - 3:25 AMThanks so much for taking the time to write this, Lady Spin. I get my fire hoop next week, and will def. take your advice. In fact, I'm already working on getting some cotton arm warmers too. Thanks again! -

Re: Recommended Tricks for New Fire Hoopers
Thu, February 28, 2008 - 6:09 AMIn additon to those, Limbo and booty bump work great with fire hoops and of course when you get those down, you can also do barrel rolls. I love doing limbo when at the very end of performance because you can get speed up, its dramatic, and you can put out your flames with enough speed.
Another thing that looks great is stalling the hoop on your chest or doing that crazy stall on your head and spinning really fast. I have been working on this for awhile where I am stalling the hoop on my head with one of the spines centered in my forhead, giving a flaming unicorn effect.. lol! The only thing I will caution you with this( besides like uhhaa.. have you hair back) is that when you spin in very dark areas... you will get more dizzy and disoriented than ususal. All you see is the circle of fire.. and nothing more.. so really work on spotting if you are doing these stalls or dont hoop in total darkness. -

Thu, February 28, 2008 - 6:21 AMThe flaming unicorn! Rebecca that's awesome ;-D
Great ideas, will have to practice at dusk for more grounded stalling... -

Re: Recommended Tricks for New Fire Hoopers
Thu, February 28, 2008 - 9:53 AMJust curious, where do all these hoop trick names come from??? I just got some long kevlar arm covers, and I am ready to finally take my fire hooping up a notch, but I have no idea what any of the tricks you guys are talking about look like. Is there a list describing them somewhere out there? -

Re: Recommended Tricks for New Fire Hoopers
Thu, February 28, 2008 - 11:10 AMWell most of the names that we refer to is from either Hoopgirl's videos or Hoopnotica videos, although the ones listed above are really different from the ones I know. Let me try to translate.
Poi (figure 8's side to side) ----> These refer to basic poi moves. Single hoop, not twins in this case. Lots of videos on this now. HG refers them to wild west if I remember right.
-Lasso (floating hoop up & down) --> This is a HN term where you turn your hand sidewase and stall the hoop in your hand as you spiral it up or spiral it down. If done continuously its referred to as "beam me up".
-Behind the back! (bending forward) --> This is a HG move. Cant remember what its called right now.
-Wheel (illusion that the hoop is turning in a stationary position in front of you) -- This is more commonly known as an Isolation. However there are many different forms of isolations, so it probally is better off with a more specific name.
-Jumps!! (try when the flame is low) (continous jump throughs, Jump ins, Jump outs)
-Galaxy spin (elbow covers a must for this one! Hoop's off your body & u twist the hoop while spinning it around your center) -- Had to think about this one but I think she is referring to the more commonly called Helicopter move.
-Hoop in hand & drop into a backbend! -- I know that Natasha calles these Pop Ins or something like that.
==== The unicorn thing is just my name... it is based off of the crazy head stall that I saw one of those North Carolina Hoop Goddesses do. I cant remember if it was Spiral, Beth, Caroleena, Jewels.. or somebody else... but regardless its the same move... the only thing is that I align the spine of the fire hoop directly in the center of my forhead before droping my hand off... thus .. giving it a flaming horn! What else would you call it but the flaming Unicorn spin??? LMAO...
Hope this helps. -

Re: Recommended Tricks for New Fire Hoopers
Thu, February 28, 2008 - 8:41 PMOooohhhh, Rebecca, now I'm *really* wanting to see a fire hooping video of you! I'm trying to picture the unicorn but I'm not getting it. Fire hooping fascinates me, but I know I am a long way off from even thinking about trying it. Of course, I'm such a non-risk taker, the first thing I will do is learn all about the safety and such. Thanks for posting the links, too! -

Re: Recommended Tricks for New Fire Hoopers
Thu, February 28, 2008 - 9:07 PMI found the video... of Anne in NC. www.youtube.com/watch okay so she does this crazy head spin... which is exactly what I am talking about.. except with a fire hoop. So...the only difference is that I place the hoop with one of the spins directly in my"thrid eye" area .. which makes it look like a horn coming out of my head... and spin really fast .... Hence the flaming unicorn spin!

Re: Recommended Tricks for New Fire Hoopers
Thu, February 28, 2008 - 9:54 AMyou guys rock. That unicorn trick sounds scary - but awesome. I'll check back with ya in a couple of months and let you know how it's going. I think I'm going to take things slow in the beginning. I sort of feel like I'm learning everything all over again, now that I've added fire. I need to get over the 'fear factor' too. It amazes me that some of you girls do all of your tricks with fire hoops. I guess you just have to pay close attention to where you're grabbing the hoop, right?
And I have very long, thick hair - I always wet it down and do a big ol' bun. -

Re: Recommended Tricks for New Fire Hoopers
Thu, February 28, 2008 - 11:18 AMMy spines are 8.5 inches off the hoop so the Unicorn Spin is not as scary as it may sound. Hair must be back, spin really fast, and practice. It can still be very disorienting to me. (Really want to work with Sprial on continous spinning... in NC)
As far as the fear factor goes, I would really suggest finding a good saftey class and practice setting yourself on fire. WTF??? yes.. I said it.. the best way to get over your fear.. is to intentionally set yourself on fire. Learn to extinguish yourself.. its not that scary or difficult. Learn to do simple transfers with fire and learn that if your hand passes over the flame quickly... your most likely not even going to feel it. The hottest part is the tip of the flame, not at the base.
One of the best things I ever did was take a saftey training class workshop with Natasha from Dayton, OH. (I am still thanking you Natasha..it was SOOO worth it, please do more).. now with any new spinners.. I follow in her footsteps.. get over your fear by learning to put yourself out in a controlled enviroment so you dont have a freakout in an unplanned one.
Good luck. -

Re: Recommended Tricks for New Fire Hoopers
Thu, February 28, 2008 - 1:30 PMHoly Crap, Rebecca! You set yourself on fire??? My jaw is literally ON. THE. FLOOR. right now. I know the Natasha you're talking about. I actually learned almost every hoop move I know by watching her You Tube videos and instructionals. She's amazing. As for the fire safety class, that's great advice. I'll have to look into that. There's actually a fire toy company based out of my area; I'll give them a buzz to see if they have any recommendations on a class like this - or I'm sure the fire dept. could help me out also. On fire, on purpose. I'm still in shock - and that's pretty cool that you were ballsy enough to do it. I think I would be scared shitless. -

Re: Recommended Tricks for New Fire Hoopers
Thu, February 28, 2008 - 2:13 PMLook... your going to the wrong place for saftey training... LOL... They will be like.. WTF girl??
You need to get involved in one of your local fire spinning or local Burning Man groups. If you dont know any ... then check out the Fire and saftey tribe ( tribes.tribe.net/fireartsedu) or go to www.homeofpoi.com/ and look in their database for local spinners. Another suggestion is to read as much as you can from NAFFP ( national american fire arts association) website www.nafaa.org/.
You and anybody else who wants to play with fire, should know about the type of gases your using, what their characteristics are, what their dangers are etc. You should know about the clothing you wear, that you should never spin with out saftey's, etc...
Gosh ... I dont mean to scare you... only educate you to the real possibilites of what you are doing.
If you are scared to set yourself on fire... then you IHO should not light your fire hoop. It is not as big of a deal as you think and when it's properly taught and done, it is very effective at coping with those fears. Also... I get very nervous at spinners who have not done this... I have seen a girl freak out cause she was on fire... and put herself and everybody else in danger.. plus threw her fire poi... bad bad thing to do... If she had remained calm... it would have been out in less than 10 seconds.
Natasha taught me this.. and I had the same thoughts as you did... but she was absolutely correct. In a very short term I was not only putting myself out but doing skin transfers... and quickly got over my fear of being on fire. It is what has allowed me to do tricks like the flaming unicorn spin. BTW, Natasha is known (loveingly ) to be the fire saftey natzi around the burn communities around here. ... I am greatful to have learned such valuable lessons from her early on...
If you need help connecting with a fire group down there let me know. If I remember correctly FLA had some pretty strick fire code regulations. -

Re: Recommended Tricks for New Fire Hoopers
Thu, February 28, 2008 - 3:47 PMHey Hulamonster.. I had a thought as I was picking up Sierra from school... you are going to be in NC in April correct? Well how about I work with you a little while and maybe like... ( *grins wide**) set you on fire... well okay.. I will start off by letting you set me on fire... first!
No in all seriousness... I will teach you what I know and help you get over your fear of putting yourself out. I always tell my safteys if its on my front .. tell me to hold and tell me where it is.. if its on my back .. come save me. ** wink** -

Re: Recommended Tricks for New Fire Hoopers
Thu, February 28, 2008 - 7:42 PMRebecca, that would be awesome if you could spend some time helping me out at the retreat. When you say you light yourself on fire, are you in a fire suit or are you in normal clothes? I knew fire hooping was hard core, but DAMN...
It makes sense, all of it. I'm going to check out those websites you recommended ASAP. Looking forward to meeting you. And thanks again for sharing your wisdom and taking the time to share some practical and necessary advice. -

Re: Recommended Tricks for New Fire Hoopers
Thu, February 28, 2008 - 8:13 PMNo.. Im not wearing fire suits.. lol! Just natural fibers. So.. anything cotton, silk , hemp, leather, etc. Synthetics.. well melt to your skin. This is yet another saftey precaution that all fire spinners should think about. This isnt to say I havent hooped in furries.. but... I have done it as an "informed" risk, verses an uneducated risk.
I will be more than happy to work with you.. and go over the basics that I know. Really you will go away feeling alot more secure about what your doing, and so should everybody else around you!

Thu, February 28, 2008 - 9:55 AMP.S. Lady Spin - I used to live in NYC and try to go back at least once a year to visit friends. You better believe I"ll be in contact with you before my next trip. I would love to spin fire on your rooftop with the city lights below. That would be amazing. -

Sun, March 9, 2008 - 12:45 PMI love the fact that they call the category "safety head, feets, and arms covers". Y'all don't want to burn your feets!!

Re: Recommended Tricks for New Fire Hoopers
Mon, March 10, 2008 - 6:58 PMThey do make the kevlar sleeves in other colors besides yellow. I have a blue pair and a white pair. They also come in red and black. I bought them at a local place here in So Cal, but I'll see if I can find a website for them. Google is your friend.
