Hi there -

Can anyone give me any basic fire hooping safety tips? I've finally put together and decorated my first one, but haven't hooped with it lit yet. Any helpful info. (for example, safety precautions and can you actually do any tricks w/ a fire hoop?) anyone might have would be very much appreciated.
Thanks!

I might get yelled at by the safety troops, but... fire hooping really isn't very dangerous. there is so much distance between the hoop and the wicks (usually a foot) that it's unlikely you will have any problems - I even hoop with my hair down sometimes (not that I recommend that).

have someone nearby w/ a damp towel as your spotter. be aware, when you are having ppl light your wicks, of where your hands are and if the wind is gonna blow the flame onto your hands - that is really the only part which could be a little tricky. once it's moving, you'll be fine. and if for some reason things get out of control or you get spooked, just let it fall to the ground - no biggie.

try to use a spout to soak your wicks so that you don't have to rotate the hoop and dunk it in a can, thereby causing fuel to run down the hoop, which makes it really slippery.

you can totally do tricks. just not quite as many behind the back ones or throwing ones or off-the-body ones. it's heavier by far of course, and the weighting is different, so it takes some getting used to.

you are gonna love it - wait til you're in that vortex.... aahhhhh!

You're going to love the sensation of a flaming hoop whirling around your body... the sound, the heat and the feel is amazing.
Its a good idea to be aware of some basic safety tips...
      This site has some good safety tips;
      www.fire-dancing.com/fire-safety.php

How many wicks are you planning to start with? The more you have than the more you will be limited in hooping off the body movements...especially passing behind the back as Claire said. Before you light up, take some time to play around with the hoop without fire. Then, once you do light up just start out with the movements you feel most comfortable with...
      Have fun!

        Claire, Diana & Ted-War -

Thanks a ton, guys. Mucho appreciation! I am starting out w/ 6 wicks (that's just how many the hoop I ordered has), so hopefully that won't be too much. I kind of feel like it's a little off-balance, but perhaps it's just me.

I want to get my hoop up around my neck but the way the fire looks, I just don't know if it would work out - too close. I saw one gal do this once and she had her hair and face pretty well covered up it looked like. Do you have to have a minimum amount of flameage or does it just look worse than it is once you get it up there? Of course I would keep my hair totally covered.

BTW - what is a nice looking head covering for this sort of thing?

    Thanks.

      Hey Wiley Cat,
it looks worse than it really is...
as long as the hoop is moving then its not going to burn you. You definetely should wear your hair up! A handkerchief bandana or hair net thingy will work fine as long as its made of natural fibers.

I figured, but god it looks bad. Even when it is all around my waist I sometimes feel like if I stopped for just a sec it would catch whatever it could on fire. Thanks. I will take precautions for sure.

wear your hair back/up, if you can.

      I have short hair
last year it was longer - but I gave up on cute hair, I work too hard and sweat too much at work to have cute hair.

okay, last year it was longer, at about the end of the summer I noticed the hair on the left side around my face was really just not growing - I am weird, but my hair doesn't grow out in an asymetrical style on it's own. I determined that hooping around my neck, which is required by law in 7 states, neatly "trimmed" my hair on that side - for some reason my hoop/wick connects in the same place every time - my hair didn't look bad, it didn't FWOOF ever (and never has in the years I've been doing fire) and it didn't singe much, just a little tiny bit every time. The good thing about hair, is that it grows back.

hopefully your hoop design is such that your wick is out far enough to not wipe your head and face with fire - my spokes are 12", rarely, only when the wind changes suddenly, have I lost my nose hairs for the sake of art.

that's what I figured. wicks have to be far enough away. I think if I try this, I am going to have my face and head covered and the material treated with flame resistant stuff first. Mine are only 7" away.

The only big dangerous part is the PVC giving off noxious fumes. I got a little over zealous with my first hoop and put seven wicks. Bad call. Now I have four and my hoop is covered in a beautiful shiny HEAT RESISTANT tape. It is really nice looking, foil, and cheaper than sparkly tape. You can buy it at any hardware store. It's like $7 for a whole roll, I did a double layer (love the weight even without wicks) and still have half a roll left. Best call ever!!!

I used the heat-resistant tape where the spokes meet the hoop, then wrapped the whole hoop in leather. My hoop has 6 wicks...I've only lit it up once but I'm quite satisfied with it.

I wrapped my fire hoop w/ normal decorative tape (indenti-tape) - still haven't lit it yet. Will this be a problem? Should I recover it w/ something more flame-resistant?

          hey gene...

the tape shouldn't be a problem as long as you don't stand still with the hoop with the flame going towards the hoop. i learnt that the hard way doing a photo shoot, melting both the tape and part of my hoop! :(

i tend not to wrap the entire hoop the way i do my regular hoops and i give myself a marker inbetween each spoke (sparkle tape/glo tape) for where to grab when i'm doing off the body moves. i wrap aluminum foil tape around where the spokes are. i started out doing one layer - now i do 3, just in case.

as for hooping around your neck - ahem...
my spokes are 7" long (longer than that and i don't really have ground clearance for jump-throughs) and i have lost way too many eye-lashes and sizzled some eye-brows and nose-hair and facial fuzz, so i'm pretty safety conscious. i wear goggles as well as elbow-length leather gloves - call me a wuss, whatever. it works for me - one second degree burn was more than enough for me (besides, i don't look great without eye-lashes).

as for hair - i used to use a hair wrap and it took me a while to figure out something more decorative, but now i've made myself a leather "crown" for lack of a better description. it wraps around the front and ties in back (you can see it in my tribe pix). i tie my hair up in a bun and over that i tie in a bunch of dread extensions which i made - some in day-glo, others the color of my hair (i braid and dread long pieces of synthetic hair and when i have enough individual braids, i use one to tie around the middle of them for a fall and then use that braid to tie around my bun. i then use individual braid/dreads to tie the rest into the shape i want and then pin it all in place). that way the front and the back of my hair is covered by the leather and the hair on top is protected by the (flame-resistant) dreads which only melt a bit if you zap them, rather than leaving you with a new hair-cut - which i've done by the way. hope this is enlightnening. :)
have fun with your virgin burn and roast that cherry!

Dear god! wow. that's a lot to think about. Thanks. um, I don't suppose you'd know of any fire hoop workshops on the east coast? i'm starting to think i'd be a lot more comfortable learning this from someone who actually knows what they're doing.

What kind of off-the-body moves can you do w/ a fire hoop? i've tried practicing w/ it unlit, and it seems to me, from where the wicks are, that it would be too easy to scorch one's self.

            Thanks for all your info!
