I just made my first fire hoop, but I think I need to tweak it a little bit before I take it out to Burning Man. I have two questions. 1) Approximately how long should I make the spokes ( mine are too short I think) and 2) what should I wrap the hoop with? I currently have mine wrapped in Duck Tape, but I think I could do better. Would electrical tape be a better choice? Thank you all for your help.

Re: Making a Fire Hoop
Tue, August 12, 2008 - 8:22 PMI make mine with 8 inch spokes, and wrap the hoop in electrical tape... I haven't really had too much trouble with tape burning or melting or anything... there is just a little melting right near the base of the spokes from one night when the wind was strong and blowing the flame back toward the hoop.

Wed, August 13, 2008 - 7:13 AMtape melting doesn't seem to be much of a problem for me except for a tiny bit right near the base of the spine. my spines are 6.5" total, 4" exposed.

Mon, September 1, 2008 - 11:08 AMMy spokes are 9 inches. They are a really nice distance, not too far, not too close. I use gaffer tape. It is bright, grips wonderfully, and doesn't melt easily! You can get a wide variety of colors at Identitape.com

Re: Making a Fire Hoop
Sat, September 13, 2008 - 4:52 PMI generally use gaffers tape or electrical tape. Both are easy for me to come by (being a stage hand and all)
I would advise against duct tape. At first its all pretty and bright and awesome.. but as it gets warmer/older the edges get sticky and gross. Also, after a couple months the duct tape separates from the fabric/glue and leaves you with a nasty residue that is damn near impossible to get rid of.
