Where to fire hoop,,,,and permits?

Just wondering where you guys light up. I live in the city in a uber strict gated community. Plus I live next door to the president of the Home Owners Association. I am afraid to hoop here because I don't even know if its legal. I've heard people talk about permits for their hoops. I tried looking up the city (Shreveport, LA) code. There is lots on burning, and it talks about burning permits, but they are one time permits for burning trash, brush piles, grass etc. There is nothing about fire performance. Any suggestions. What are the rules where you are? Anyone have these permits? So, far the only place I've lit up is at my folks, in the country. I thought about finding some empty parking lot and going for it, but I don't know what the penalty for such things are. Help anyone?

Yeah, But I really doubt there are too many fire performers in Shreveport, I wanted to have a little more information before I started calling 'em up fire department. So I don't get the someone who doesn't know and just tells me no to git rid of me. I've read several places where people talked about permits, just wondered what their code read, and where they went (any firestation, fire commisioner, fire prevention office?

I'm a bit confused, what state are you in? Louisiana?
It's possible that you have fairly rigid state codes because of New Orleans. On the other hand, all of that stuff might have been left up to the parishes to regulate. Start with the websites for the state fire marshal, then the city and county pages. If you come up dry, call a fire marshal. Make them quote the laws on the websites.

SHe is in California, same as you Tedward.

As he said, call the fire department or go there with your hoop. I live in a super hick/redneck town and the first day I moved here I went over th the fire department and told them that I am a fire performer and that I have a business that deals with making fire toys. I told them that I know plenty of fire saftery and discussed some of the guidlines i follow, like these www.nafaa.org/NAFAASafety.pdf
After explaining myself and asking if I need any permits or permissions, they said, "can we come watch?"

If you are straight up with the local authorities on what you do and go tell your neighbors that if they see a ring of fire in the street, not to be alarmed, you should be all good.

Thanks for the advice, and sorry for the confusion, I am in Louisiana, I just moved from Palmdale Ca haven't updated the info. I'm going to try the state specific fire pages. If not I guess I'll just call the fire department as suggested. I wouldn't be so worried if I didn't live next to Mr. "I know the law and if you break it I'll take you to court". He's mostly just annoying, he tried to tell us out dog (Doberman) was to big thus posed a threat/annoyance to neighbors and if he really wanted he could take us to court. I just want all my ducks in a row so I don't have to deal with him.
I can see it now performing for some firefighter party!

              Heheeh
Yeah, or if you need to, just find a nearby park to keep it out of his sight....

i used to hoop in my front yard, but had to move it to the back because of some really nosy neighbors...even with the flameless hoop they would come over and interrupt my practice or keep calling me until i had to go over there to shut them up. after seeing me practice unlit with my fire hoop, they said, "don't let me see you catching that thing on fire!" they're old and probably think i'm some kind of heathen witch... :)

Smaller towns are verry much like this. It is only in cities where they have been exposed to fire dancing where you have to track down a permit. Most peopel who havent seen it much or at all are just floored and will come watch rather than alert authorities. And the authorities tend to do the same. i coonducted an improptu performance in a friends yard during a birthday party. i mostly used the side walk in front actually. Being on a very main street an officer of the law drove by and did take intrest. He looped back to ask me to do it again because he had missed it.

No gaurentees herre, but i have spontaniously performed all up and down the west coast and never been asked for a permit. i display knowledge of fire saftey and an air of competancy and it doesnt tend to occur to them i need a permit as i have total control of the fire and it is not on the ground, like a campfire.

Places like Seattle though, you have to get a day permit to perform, its $80. They say you need to have your gear checked out, your show demo'd before hand and your performance watched by the fire marshall. They also say you cant use white gas.

But the reality is, they take your $80 they write you a waiver to be able to use white gas, they dont even blink at your gear and once your there, you'll never see the firemarshall. But you can spin inside :)

A better option is to by the performers insurance it's liek $200 a year and covers you and your audience for any clownign type performance, fire spinning and juggling included. This you could show to any authorities in place of a permit. That is to my undestanding it superceeds the need.

    Not so helpful, but...

It's easier to ask forgiveness than permission

just a random opinion - but - it's always good to try and view yourself as paving the way for fire dancers everywhere. permits are sometimes a real pain (i've lit up plenty of times without a permit because the club didn't care and it was the "easy" way)
but take in to consideration - the more we expose the authorities to our craft with a positive experience - the more respect we will all gain in the big picture and help to improve the process!

not to get all deep & sh*t =)

      keep dancin firery fire godesses!!

        Hello All,

I wanted to bump up this discussion because I still have some questions after reading this thread. I just started a business and I'd like to add 'Fire Performances' to our list of offerings. Of course, I need to hone my skills and get more comfortable performing in front of people before I start to book paid fire hooping performances. With that said, I have a couple of questions...

        1) Does the Clowns of the US Insurance cover all aspects of performance? I was told that fire hooping isn't covered under their $200/ annual policy. Is this just a nasty rumor or does someone out there have this insurance who can help me clarify the coverage particulars? I plan to touch base with them directly - but thought one of you might have some insight. Also, is it "per performer" coverage or can it cover the entire business? FYI -there are three fire hoopers in my group.

        2) I was also told that sometimes the venues cover you and/ or you can get a permit prior to each performance. Does anyone have experience with this?

        3) So, if one officer or one fire marshall says it's ok for us to light up, that doesn't necessarily mean that the next official who sees you light up will be ok with it, right? Therefore, if one particular fire dept, for example, says it's cool - do you get that in writing to cover yourself?

I just want to make sure I go about this the right way. On the same note, as you can imagine (and as many of you know), starting a business is a major damper on the wallet. IF there's a cost-effective and legal way to approach this stuff, please enlighten me. And thanks, in advance, for any/ all feedback. I love this Tribe, and I also love learning from all of you who have been there/ done that :)

          1) Incorrect, All fire acts are covered. But, You really should call them, not ask people who aren't related to CotUS. And it's 'per performer'.
          2) Party planners can get "event insurance" and sometimes it can cover fire performances. Though typically not, even when fire is planned. Event insurance covers a single event/location and not a whole year/person like the CotUS plan.
          3) Kinda. If the first one gives you permission in writing, and is at the same or higher level than the next, you're pretty much in the clear. Most cities have some kind of permitting process, even if only a few people know about it.

Your best bet is to talk to the public safety, public assemblage, cabaret, or general Fire Marshals in your city. The guys at the fire station who put out fires won't know as much as the Marshals. Some more rural areas will handle all permits through the police, but that's rare. And smaller cities sometimes don't have inspectors, and it's all run through the chief.
