A couple of years ago I built my first fire hoop. It is a six/three spine, removable spine hoop. I am absolutely happy with the construction of the hoop but I am having trouble with getting the flames right, they are too big and too hot (Like melt my precious hoop hot). I reduced the amount of fuel I put on each wick, but then I get some wicks that just don't burn the whole way through. It rocks when I just do three because I get huge whooshing fire trails. But I want more than three.
I think maybe I should have five spines. At 2X2X2 are my wicks too big? I am using straight white gas. Is that a problem? I've been looking for lamp oil to mix 50/50, would that help? How much, and how to do apply your fuel? How long do you wait before lighting the wicks? Any other tips for me?

Re: Help with my hoop/wicks!
Sat, July 4, 2009 - 2:01 PMThey are just shy of 8 in total. There is about 7" from hoop to end of wick and 5" from the closest wick to hoop. -

Re: Help with my hoop/wicks!
Sat, July 4, 2009 - 2:35 PMThat should be enough. And your wicks are melting the hoop? Sounds like a poor selection in hoop material. But that can be corected ometimes with aluminum tape. they make it for fixing mufflers and such, thick aluminum tape will reflect enough heat to keep you from melting, and enough light that you'll look like you have double the wicks... :) -

Re: Help with my hoop/wicks!
Sat, July 4, 2009 - 6:43 PMMaybe hoop material is a problem, but the bigger problem is I can't survive in a hoop that hot. The flames are just too big! -

Sat, July 4, 2009 - 6:50 PMThen cut 'em down to half size, that should reduce the fireball. -

Re: Help with my hoop/wicks!
Sun, July 5, 2009 - 1:03 PMThanks, I think your right. I burned twice last night, once with six once with three. The difference was unbelievable! With six the hoop is too heavy, to hot, and not very maneuverable. With three, the big flames aren't a problem, and there is more room to move the hoop around my body. i think I'll make a new hoop with four wicks, and much smaller wicks at that and also keep my three spine hoop, -

Re: Help with my hoop/wicks!
Tue, July 7, 2009 - 12:19 AMI think it could deal a lot with your use of only white gas. I always use a 50/50 mix of white gas/kerosene. I used all white gas once, and I felt the flames were ridiculously hot and huge, it was actually kinda scary. Also, the flames didn't last quite as long as when I use the 50/50 mix. The only downside to using kerosene is the fucking smell. It is extremely difficult to get off of anything, and even though the fuel is burnt from your wicks, they will smell strongly and make everything they touch smell of kerosene. Also, kero. is very oily and slippery. I'm considering switching to lamp oil. It has pretty much the same properties of kero, but apparently smells a lot less and is easier and nicer to deal with. Good luck!

Re: Help with my hoop/wicks!
Tue, July 7, 2009 - 6:37 AMI think I need this aluminum tape for my fire hoop too (thanks for the suggestion!) I just don't know where to find it. I would prefer to buy some at a store in lieu of ordering it online. Any suggestions?
Thanks!! -

Re: Help with my hoop/wicks!
Tue, July 7, 2009 - 2:34 PMYeah, they have it at Home Depot or Lowes check the tape isle by paints. If you just go to the AC section you may only find the stuff with writing printed on it. Its pretty wide though. I got mine from Identi-Tape.
