Hello beautiful fire aficionados!
I am an avid hooper and have decided to buy my first fire hoop (yay - so excited!) I wanted to be sure i was really secure in my hooping before purchasing my fire toy, and now I feel ready. My question is regarding spine length. The company I'm ordering my hoop from (www.trickconcepts.com/hoops.aspx) has spines available in 3 lengths: 6.5" (165mm), 8.5" (216mm) and 10.5" (267mm) long. I have pretty much ruled out the longest length, but am torn between the short & medium length. My understanding is that the shorter length will give me greater freedom with vertical moves, but it will also be significantly closer to my body. I'm leaning towards the medium, but don't want to regret getting wicks that are too long. I was wondering what everyone's experiences were with different spine lengths and would love any recommendations for my first fire hoop!
Thanks everyone, your thoughts are much appreciated!
Oh, p.s. - I will be ordering the 40" diameter hoop (I think....44" seems really big! But is bigger better with fire?)

Re: First fire hoop - spine length question
Sat, July 19, 2008 - 4:16 PMi think it all depends on how tall you are. i'm only 5'2" and i could not even do many vertical moves with a 40"+6.5" hoop. my current hoop is closer to 36"+7" and it's still a bit big. i'm in the process of making a smaller one (33+6). the first time i used it i was very nervous since the flame was so close but now that i'm used to it, the shorter spines are not a big deal at all.

Re: First fire hoop - spine length question
Sat, July 19, 2008 - 6:05 PMOh man, that's a little worrisome...I'm 5'4", so not too much taller than you! And this retailer doesn't make their hoops smaller than 40"! Sounds like I'll need the smaller spines with my hight and the size of the hoop they make. It shouldn't be too hard to deal with the smaller spines, right? -

Re: First fire hoop - spine length question
Sat, July 19, 2008 - 9:44 PMI have had two fire hoops -
I am 5'9 which is taller than both of you. I have been fire hooping since December - probably getting in a fire session once or twice a month. My first fire hoop was a 40 inch from spinsterz. That hoop is heavier because it breaks down into three parts and clicks together. I had to tape over the plugs because they bugged me and taping made the hoop feel more stable when spinning considering the torque that builds up with the rubberized flex spines.
6 spines - total length 8 inches w/ approx 3/4 inch threaded and screwed into the hoop. Large wicks -coiled kevlar 1.5 inch webbing secured with a wire and some sewing along the outer seam. It worked but didn't feel perfect. Maybe because I was using a much smaller hoop for everything other than fire and lighter too. I couldn't do many of the off body moves I do with the smaller non fire hoops. I spun this hoop about 12 times before looking at others hoops and shopping the web.
My next hoop was made by Holistic Hoops - custom by Kandace. 38 inch/one piece of tubing w/ one connector.
5 spines - 6 inch total w/ approx 3/4 inch threaded into the tubing like the spinsterz. The wicks are smaller and kevlar wrapping cotton wadding.
I have spun this hoop now on three occasions. I love the spacing of the 5 wicks and with the smaller wick head size, the flames are not too intense with the shorter spine. The spines flex with a large spring and this is not covered. With the spinsterz flex you have an area that doesn't get hot like the spring spine can at the end of a spin. That is my only issue -(I add here that the wicks burn about 2 min longer than the spinsterz...2 min is long when you are working fire)
. I love this hoop and currently rate it as 99% heavenly.
So, you see, there are all kinds of other factors to consider beyond the spine length. I think the 6.5 would be sweet, but then that's just me. Let us know what you end up with and how it goes (glows) -

Re: First fire hoop - spine length question
Sat, July 19, 2008 - 10:03 PMAfter posting this, I thought maybe it would help if I post two vids - one of a spin with the spinsterz hoop (both Eddie and I had spinsterz for this).
blip.tv/file/821609/
and this one of a spin with the holistic hoop (both dbug and I have holistics)...
blip.tv/file/1087400
you can see I have a bit of a challenge right now with my step throughs being I'm tall and the hoop is smaller - but off body stuff is possible with the smaller hoop size. -

Re: First fire hoop - spine length question
Mon, July 21, 2008 - 11:11 AMThanks for posting your videos, Mari! It really helped to see the comparison between the two hoops. I didn't realize realize that the size of the wick made that much of a difference in the way that the fire interacts with your movements. I though I'd prefer the larger wicks, but I really like the compactness of the smaller wick and the way the fire moves with you - it looks very clean. The interaction with the flame also probably has a lot to do with the length of the spines. Humph - so much to consider!!!
