So sad, I bought a fire hoop and over the last 6 months - I have had 7 spokes/spines snap. I don't want to go into the particulars here, except in my humble opinion (and that of a couple of engineer friends of mine) is that there is a flaw with the design. Need to have a firehoop that I can count on for upcoming events.
I am not rough and abusive but have been known to loose my grip from time to time and hoop flies, nothing out of the ordinary at all - still the wicks end up flying off - danger Will Robinson - danger indeed.
So, tell me what spoke/spine set ups you all enjoy and count on. Need to resolve this issue soon!

Re: spokes/spines breaking
Fri, June 6, 2008 - 12:14 AMThere's three schools of thought on this. First is to go with a flexible spine like holistic hoops, or to upgrade the typical aluminum or mild steel spine to a tougher material, like titanium or high carbon steel; and finally, to go with a curved spine that enters the hoop twice. This last option isn't available in any of the shops I know, but it's a good home remedy. Basically, bend an all-thread over into a semi-circle about 4" in radius (or bigger to get the wick farther away) and attach both ends to the hoop with the wick in the middle.
But if you really want to win hearts and minds, get those engineer friends to come up with their own design. Just keep flammable materials away from the wick (about 3-4 inches should do) and avoid copper.

Re: spokes/spines breaking
Fri, June 6, 2008 - 8:35 PMI have heard good things regarding Holistic and even checked out one of their hoops last night while fuming (pun intended) about the dangerous situation of having flaming wicks flying while practicing in a large group.
Like the design Holistic uses - does the warble or the wobble of the braided spines take getting use to? -

Mon, June 9, 2008 - 5:57 AMI agree...Kandice's hoops are wonderful...
I have mine for almost 3 years now...
I am a performer and I am VERY abusive of it....
I never had to change any of my spikes, and I am not even close to do so!!!
for the wobbling part...I do not remember it bathering me at all...
I recommend holistic hoops...

Tue, June 10, 2008 - 6:26 AMGlad to hear this as I had been considering the holistic hoop. Always good to ask others what they use and count on. I'll let you know how it goes. -

Re: spokes/spines breaking
Tue, June 10, 2008 - 8:36 AMI've been seeing a lot of Shakti's hoops lately. They are the lightest I've seen but they get a little flutter in the flame. It's a cable spoke design. I'm fairly happy with my Spinsters hoop. If you come to the Grove Fire Spinning tonight, you are welcome to give it a whirl.

Re: spokes/spines breaking
Mon, July 21, 2008 - 7:03 PMI built a hoop that will withstand anything.. problem is it weighs nearly 3 lbs but honestly I like the weight. I use five zinc/steel carriage bolts which are 5/16' by 8 inches, lock nuts, spacers and washers. It's simple but a little to heavy for most people's taste plus there are major design flaws. If you are in a bind and need a fire hoop quick this is probably the fastest solution. I made mine in two hours. It seriously has withstood some crazy shit. There is no way those spokes are going to break. If you want to know more let me know but it is in no way the greatest fire hoop in the world, it is just the toughest I have used plus it's my first. Just a thought :) -
