So I just lit up my fire hoop for the first time the other night and freaked out! I guess I kind of forgot how much I am not comfortable with fire. It seemed so close to me...like the flames were going to jump out and grab me...or burn my hands as I was holding the hoop. I tried with one wick lit but it was still panic inducing. I really want to do this but it is proving a lot more difficult than I thought. How easy is it to get burned? Does anyone have any advice? Help!

Re: Fear of the Fire
Sun, June 1, 2008 - 12:57 PMI'm guessing from your comments you have never spun fire poi or staff. Do you know any other fire spinners? If you do, It could be worth your while meeting up with them whilst they spin. Learn to put out their toys for them with a fire blanket. Also learn how to put a person out if they catch fire. Practice what you would do if you were to catch fire. Get used to the sound of the flames. Practice how to treat all the kinds of burns you can get when playing with fire.
Having said that, accidents that end up with serious burns are very rare but you really need to know what to do if it happens.
Once you feel more in control over how to deal with problems you will feel less fear.
Always wear natural fibres to spin in, like leather, denim, cotton. Do NOT wear flammable clothing, hairspray, loose dangling clothing. Tie up and cover hair. Always have a safety with you when you hoop. Someone who knows what they are doing, that stays calm and knows how to put out flames and treat burns. Always have a fire blanket and extinguisher with you. The blanket to use on people and toys and the extinguisher to use if you set the ground/ bushes etc on fire. Have a burns first aid kit with you.
The tops of the flames are the hottest the base is coolest. Any exposed metal that's near flame will and does get very hot....
Erm..thats all I can think of right now.
Be informed, be sensible and perform within your comfort limits.

(For lots of safety stuff)
It does sound a bit like pyrophobia. it strikes a lot of people. It's possible to overcome, but I gotta tell you it could be a very long and hard road.
First step is to become very comfortable with everything else: hooping, hooping with an unlit fire hoop, your fire suppression setup, etc. Wait until you've got as many of those ducks in a row before you try it again. Then start with a candle and meditate on all the worst-case scenarios that come to mind. Then work to build up your safety net to resolve them. It might mean that you won't be comfortable enough until you have two firemen, on opposite sides of you, with fire hoses at the ready (worst case scenario); maybe just having someone watch your back with a damp towel will be enough.
And yes there are other ways to get accustomed to fire without wicks wizzing at your face. It will be important for you to explore them. May I suggest starting with a tool with which you have more direct control of the flames? Torches, fans, swords and staves are all much more controlled and will allow you to learn just how far you can go before getting burned.

Re: Fear of the Fire
Mon, June 2, 2008 - 7:07 AMI'm also fairly new to fire hooping... the first time I lit up, it was terrifying! For the first 45 seconds or so, I could only stand there, holding the hoop, pretty much frozen. Once the flames had burned down a bit and were a little smaller, I finally got up the guts to waist hoop. After that, each time I did it was less and less scary. I've done it 6 or 7 times now, and I no longer hesitate before beginning to hoop, and I'm able to do some basic tricks with it. So I'd say its just a matter of facing it, over and over, until you're comfortable with it. And, I'm not sure if you actually started hooping, or were just able to hold the hoop, but for me, as soon as I actually started hooping, and realized that I wasn't getting burned, it got easier.
Good luck!! Its worth it, I promise! -

Re: Fear of the Fire
Mon, June 2, 2008 - 8:45 AMI think one of the things that kept me from being afraid the first time I lit up (aside from all the suggestions already listed here, and having a competent fire safety right there with me and ready to act if something went wrong) was experimenting with contact fire play (briefly lighting yourself on fire and extinguishing yourself in a controlled way using rubbing alcohol and torches) ahead of time. If you know any fire folk in your area, inquire about taking a workshop. It's a fantastic lesson in trusting yourself, overcoming fear, and building a respectful relationship with the flame.

Best of luck! It's worth it, I promise! -

Re: Fear of the Fire
Mon, June 2, 2008 - 10:12 AMi have been spinning fire for about 4 years and I am terrified of fire. As I child I was afraid to even play with sparklers on the 4th of July. I started fire dancing because my boyfriend was in a fire group and I was fire safety for a year. After a year I was bored with just sitting around and watching other people do things and I decided that I should learn them to. I started with poi and eventually started hooping and later learned staff and now I even do fire transfers. Over the years I have gotten much more comfortable with the flame by forcing myself to practice with it as much as possible. I have worked through an enormous amount of frustration of not being able to do all of the fun tricks that I want to and that I can do when my tool is not on fire because I am afraid. I find that I have to feel pretty comfortable with my tricks before I will even attempt to do it on fire.
My one tip with fire hooping is to get it moving pretty well right off the bat. The only time I have been burned by the flames is when I was doing stationary movements as part of choreography when first lighting the hoop. It is counter intuitive, but the flames aren't as hot and dangerous if they are spinning around you!
Keep trying and practicing. It gets more fun!

Re: Fear of the Fire
Mon, June 2, 2008 - 11:23 AMI am very new to playing with fire. I think I have fire hooped less than a dozen times. I was really surprised to feel less fear every time I picked up the hoop - it's been a different expereince literally every time with a new layer of comfort AND fear becoming exposed. I was shaking so hard after the first burn I had, but I don't have that reaction anymore. It helped to accidentally graze my arms and hands with the flames and see that all I was really sacrificing was arm hair, and really it didn't hurt like I thought it would...of course, these are just seconds of hitting the wrong part of the hoop or having it wobble and not a flame sitting on my skin for very long. I am sure it's possible to lose much more than arm hair, so I stick to moves I am comfrotable with when I light up because I do not want to be burned.
The stationary flames are more intimidating. I think it helps to keep moving, even just waist hooping, for a good minute to let some of the initial flame die down. Fire is really overwhelming! The other thing I did was practice hooping with the hoop unlit to get my body used to it - the size, the weight, the presence of wicks and spokes generally. I practiced only grabbing the hoop on the inside rim, away from the flames and spokes, and saw what moves I could do "smoothly" without causing one of the unlit wicks to hit me. Normally I can feel good about grabbing my practice hoops anywhere to make them do what I want, but the fire hoop required me to be much more cautious.
Keep practicing and getting to know your hoop! Comfort will come with time. :)

Re: Fear of the Fire
Mon, June 2, 2008 - 1:00 PMaww this is so sweet!! i love the fact that hoopers can seek support and get some amazing responses.
Let's take a second to realize how lucky we are for the internet and for tribe.net! seriously! we are blessed to have such a strong community base!
I do believe you can get over the fear, it'll just take time. FOR A couple months I only burned with 4 spokes lite until I was ready!
Before you'll know it you'll be rocking it!
Sometimes you'll be feeling the flow so hard--you'll almost pull a move that scares you and you'll have a sudden fear flash back! one time I almost ducked out and spun it on my elbow and thought the spokes would smack me in the face and I dropped the hoop and broke my old model! eeek!
Recently I have burnt my nose hairs completely, recieved a 2nd degree burn between my pinkie n ring finger from grabbing the hoop wrong and slipping around the spoke! ouchie! and during the same burn my shirt went up in flames! (yes it was synthetic and yes I had layers on) but whew!! things will happen.....but as long as you have a safetys, wet towels and a clear mind you'll be fine!!!
to be honest----I like LED hooping better--so if you aren't feeling it...selling your hoop and getting a psi isn't the worst idea!! Just give yourself time! I love being able to enjoy both!
ps. I just got some FIRE FANS and have been praciticing with them a ton! cannot wait to burn for the first time! either tonight or tomm! whee!

Re: Fear of the Fire
Mon, June 2, 2008 - 3:23 PMI will only perform moves that I am totally comfortable and confident with. It was only last weekend at PDF that I did duckouts with my fire hoop for the first time. If I'm not sure about a particular move, I'll record a video of myself with my firehoop unlit, and watch my face as I perform a move. If my face looks as though I'm stressed or struggling during a move, I won't do it with fire until I look entirely relaxed and at ease with it. -

Re: Fear of the Fire
Mon, June 2, 2008 - 11:32 PMAlso do you have any friends that own a fire staff or onther fire equipment? Maybey you could have a little play with on of those first to get comfey with the fire I fell that a staff when first trying fire is a little more easy to control than a hoop.
You could just start with lighting one end of it and playing with moving it around in the air so you get use to the feeling of the fire and the sound that it makes in the air as it moves. -

Re: Fear of the Fire
Tue, June 3, 2008 - 6:50 AMI agree with the suggestions of playing with fire (that's not your hoop)... because lets face it... there's a LOT of fire to a fire hoop (and not many other people will pick that up as apposed to picking up other tools).
Get familiar with the fire, then try lighting your hoop again.
Staff is a good one in my opinion to try, and has some similar vertical moves that you can do with a hoop later.

Re: Fear of the Fire
Tue, June 3, 2008 - 7:45 AMI would love to try some different fire tools....however, where I live there is absolutely no fire community nor do I know anyone else who handles fire. I'm thinking my best bet may be to practice with only w few (2-3) spokes lit at a time to try and get comfortable with it. I am very confident in my hooping abilities and I've been practicing with the fire hoop unlit...I really appreciate all of the responses and will keep posting my fire progress..assuming that I make some...haha! -

Re: Fear of the Fire
Tue, June 3, 2008 - 2:56 PMWhere exactly are you in FL? I am familiar with several FL hoopers and I'm feeling the urge to hook you up with them. Even if a little of travel is involved...this interaction with others is extremely important in overcoming barriers and making progress! What about the Hoola Monstars??? I met up with a couple of the girls when I was in town in April.
Let's make something happen!!!! Why don't you start spreading the hoopla? I created a hooping community while attending Radford back in southern Virginia....sometimes yea I had to call the girls and really push for them to join me in the sunshine down @ the park but once they really embraced one nice hooping session--they are addicted!!!!!!!! get it started girl I know you've got it! wear one of your cute outfits somewhere in public and you will be approached!
=)
love yoU!

Re: Fear of the Fire
Tue, June 3, 2008 - 7:41 PMOh, sorry, I run a fire tool company named Bearclaw Manufacturing. It's been very educational to me for learning where fire folks are. Though I can't give you names, I can tell you that I've sold tools to (at first glance) what looks like 3 dozen people (probably a couple of doubles, but you get the idea) in the actual city of Jacksonville. That doesn't cover surrounding areas or any mis-spellings of Jacksonville.

Re: Fear of the Fire
Tue, June 3, 2008 - 7:24 PMI'm in Jacksonville...Atlantic Beach to be exact....you're right, I do need to try and hook up with some other hoopers! I should take a trip down to Tampa...I think that's where the monsters are. I am actually in the process of putting together a hoopdance class/workshop in my town at the local yoga studio..I'm stoked about it! But like you've mentioned before, it would be great to hoop with some people on your skill level or better so you can push eachother to learn new things. Emily was my hooping buddy til she up and moved to Rhode Island:(...If you know anyone else in FL please do hook me up with them...I'm craving some hoop interaction! LOve ya...~C -

Re: Fear of the Fire
Tue, July 15, 2008 - 4:54 PMI would relax a bit, there are burners in Jacksonville, and in orlando, and tampa, and all over florida. there are troupes there, people do get together, you just need to find them. search on google, search on tribe, on meetup on all those sites, search away, youll find people who share the passion.
It is very important for you to be comfortable with your moves before lighting it up. Its also important for you to be comfortable with the fire, I recommend some torches because they are close to you, but you can hold them really far away from you if you want until you get use to the feel of it, then as you get more comfortable you could hold it closer to your body, and have fun dancing around and doing some tricks (:
If you dont have the ability to have a saftey (which you REAAAALLLY should have, and know how to do yourself) Maybe at least you could spin your toys above some water? a kiddi pool, or the beach or something (just make sure where you practice its legally allowed, huge fines can be issued for spinning where its not okay) but maybe if your ankle deep in water you would feel a bit more comfortable?just think through what would make it less scary to you. and go slowly... its much more rewarding when your not afraid of the fire anymore. and if you push yourself to early, you will take even longer to feel more okay about it.
Possibly an led hoop would also help.. maybe have the led's be the color your fire is (: then at least you can get use to bright colors spinning around your body, without the danger or the heat.

Re: Fear of the Fire
Tue, June 10, 2008 - 9:29 AMthis is a great suggestion. i also stick to the "flinch, no fire" rule. it i scrunch my face while performing the move, i know i'm not ready to do it.
the best thing you can do it have someone very familiar with fire safety work with you on contact play. you have to be comfortable with the fire touching you, and you need to be able to trust your safety. after all, they are the one who's going to save your ass when it catches fire. do you have a fire spinning community near you? if you do, getting involved is the best way to become more comfortable with fire spinning. so much of it is about catching the groove, being inspired and learning how to perform as safely as possible.

Re: Fear of the Fire
Sun, June 22, 2008 - 10:14 AM..fire hoop is a workout for me {not only cuz it is much heavier then regular hoop}..
the only thing which worries me is my hair flaming up. i usually spring them with water.
i only got burnt by the spikes, the steal, touching my arm. the fire doesn't seem that dangerous, cuz it moves fast.
there is a lot you can do to protect yourself. like gloves are great. and cotton clothes..and practicing a lot.~*!

Heat shrink, and black socks
Wed, July 16, 2008 - 5:28 AMFind an electrician and get some heat-shrink tubing. Put it over the metal part of the wick. You'll have to take the actual wick off. Once the steel gets hot, the tubing shrinks to fit and provides a pretty good insulation. You can still get burned by the steel, but only if you hold on, not if you touch it lightly. (You can't cut heat-shrink lengthwise because it will shrink away from itself.)
I wear cut-off black socks, wet, over my wrists. That's the only place I've been burned and the water and the cotton protect me enough to feel more confident.
I also have a "dummy" fire hoop made with heavier spikes and no wicks for practice. Good to have the extra weight and double-circumference to play with without having to worry about breaking a real fire hoop.
