Cost to make my own fire hoop...

topic posted Fri, May 9, 2008 - 10:35 AM by  Chelsea
I need to make a fire hoop before next week and I am short on funds. Can anyone tell me about how much supplies cost to make my own and if anyone has any suggestions on materials I would greatly appreciate it.

I just made mine for about $20, but I already had the hoop, tape, and kevlar. The kevlar is the expensive part, but I've heard you can use towels (wire wrap them really tight) if you are only going to burn it once or twice.

I think a lot of people will argue that the towel idea isn't the right way to go. Invest in the kevlar. Do it right the first time.

investing in kevlar is important. Find a group of other fire dancers to throw in and order bulk--its the best way to go. If not...not to worry, you'll burn those spokes down eventually!
Let me know how it ends up! I need to make a less "whonky" one!

Well so far I have managed to build the hoop, decorate it and have started sewing my kevlar on. I did not have kevlar thread so I unraveled a portion from a different section and used that to sew it together and reinforce it. So far this have worked really well. My hoop is a bit too heavy because of the hardware. I need to go find thinner lighter carrage bolts. I also learned from a friend that lock nuts are not the best nuts to use to fasten the wicks. She said regular bolts work just fine. The rubber on the lock nuts will melt. Anywho, I hope this works.

This may be a little late for this time, but for next time, you don't need to sew the wicks... you can use gorilla glue (I put a line of glue for every wrap around). It holds very very well, especially once you burn it. I did this with my fire hoop, and my boyfriend has been making poi heads this way for going on a decade now and never had a problem. Much quicker and easier than sewing!! :)

I did sew the wicks but I want to try the gorilla glue way. Thanks! Oh by the way my hoop turned out awesome, actually people that I was spinning with said its the most durable hoop they have seen and I have been asked to make more. Who knew! I performed at Element 11 (the Utah burn) and it was amazing! I am addicted!! I can't wait to fire hoop again performing or not! Thank you for the advice. It helped a great deal! I was stressing big time but it was all very very worth it! :)

The nylon lock nuts are good if you need to put a nut on the inside of the hoop but yes they are not so good for the out side of the wick but you should be using two nuts rarther than just one also don't for get to put a largish washer on there.
