Re: Non cancer-causing Fuel?
Tue, July 29, 2008 - 9:29 AMive heard of using biodiesel... but that could be just a rumor... -

Re: Non cancer-causing Fuel?
Tue, July 29, 2008 - 10:54 AMYeah...I heard that too. I found this thread on the fire arts tribe...
Thought about giving it a whirl:

Re: Non cancer-causing Fuel?
Tue, July 29, 2008 - 11:47 AMBiodeisel is pretty much the same thing as petrol fuel. It's just that time and pressure have knocked off most of the Oxygen groups from the vegetable matter and made the chemicals into petrol. They still use long carbon chains as the fuel source.
Incomplete combustion is the primary cause of carcinogenic compounds, so the shorter the carbon chains in the initial soup, the better off you are. Also, there's a whole category or two of unsafe compounds (ie benzenes) that can be distilled out. If you want the whole, technical info, it's posted on the NAFAA wiki:
nafaa.pbwiki.com/FuelBusters
So, shorter, more purified fuels are the best chance of reduced carcinogens. Taht means white gas, or rubbing alcohol (ethanol and methanol have a whole set of other issues). -

Tue, July 29, 2008 - 11:55 AMRisking the possibility of sounding like a complete idiot...what does that mean in English (respectfully)?
Can you spin with rubbing alcohol???
What do you think of Klean-heat? -

Re: Non cancer-causing Fuel?
Tue, July 29, 2008 - 12:02 PMNope, better to ask than to just make something up.
Yes, rubbing alcohol is flammable (they use it a lot in S&M scenes). At 70%, it burns a lot like 151 rum: weak flame easily put out, but nice to control on the skin. At 91% (the highest you can get in Rite Aide), it's much hotter, not particularly good for skin contact, still a little shorter burn than white gas, definitely more potent smell. At 99% (you can find at Vons, sometimes, hardware stores others) the burn is almost exactly like white gas but MUCH cleaner (and will take the soot out of the air locally).
Klean Heat is attempting to be the 1/2 way point between white gas and lamp oil. If you're the type that likes to make a 50-50 mix of them, then klean heat might be for you. But, it's still a petrol product, and not at severely refines as lamp or white gas. For the price, you might as well get Tiki fuel. -

Re: Non cancer-causing Fuel?
Tue, July 29, 2008 - 12:09 PMGotcha.
So it sounds like the answer is no, not really is there a fuel that is completely safe to the human body :) -

Re: Non cancer-causing Fuel?
Tue, July 29, 2008 - 1:54 PMUmm, I think technically that even Methanol or Methane can still form CO molecules, so, yeah, you're right, nothing safe, just stuff that's 'safer'...
In this image:
nafaa.pbwiki.com/FuelComp
Stuff that's more 'top' and more 'left' are safer.
Translated into fuels: Lamp oil, kleen heat, white gas and alcohols are left-most, while charcoal fluid, kerosene, diesel, gasoline, lighter fluid, and "benzine" products are all to the right. White gas and alcohol, top, lamp bottom. And given the choice, left is more important than top. In other words, a good clean lamp oil is way better than a very top benzene.

Re: Non cancer-causing Fuel?
Sat, August 2, 2008 - 10:43 AMIn a case study funded by the NBB (National Biodiesel Board) it was found the emissions from burning biodiesel (at ASTM standards) had fewer overall emissions. However the NOx went up., slightly.

Re: Non cancer-causing Fuel?
Sat, August 2, 2008 - 11:49 AMYes, and "white" gasoline burns without emissions at all, but both of those studies involve an internal combustion engine. They're VERY different beasts in an open flame environment.
