I love spinning my 100psi fire hoop; but there are some tricks I find I can't do with it due to its lightness. My biggest problem has been with doing fast reversals/breaks. My hoop tends to misshape and has even kinked twice when I grab it with my hand or inside arm and reverse direction. I can't figure out if this is 'normal' or maybe this section of tubing was mismanufactured. Specs: 36" diameter 5 spokes at 5 1/2". Anyone else ever/never have this kind of problem?

Re: 100psi for fast breaks?
Mon, July 20, 2009 - 1:25 PMThis is definitely a noticeable difference from heavier tubing.
But the good news is that with a little patience and practice, you'll get used to the feel of it flexing. It'll become second nature like other tricks..
If you make your own wicks, try to make them as light as possible to lessen the amount of force the hoop has to absorb. Maybe less wicking or aluminum spokes (though aluminum has its own set of problems- bending/breaking) Or consider sanding your hoops instead of adding weight by taping..
Fast breaks and reverses will be the death of my first 100psi hoop (37", six 5.5" spokes). Between that and someone stepping on it at a festival, I've gotten a pretty nasty kink in my tubing:( Making a new one this week though:)

Re: 100psi for fast breaks?
Tue, July 21, 2009 - 11:18 AMMy solution has been to use a heavier psi - 160 or 180 - but use really skinny tubing, like 1/2" or 5/8". Then it's still light, but it's less fragile. -

Re: 100psi for fast breaks?
Tue, July 21, 2009 - 12:19 PMGood idea, I'll have to give this a try. I've been considering using 1/2" but always thought it would too flimsy because I've only ever seen it in 120psi. I'll have to look around for some heavier stuff.
Thanks for the suggestion. -

Re: 100psi for fast breaks?
Tue, July 21, 2009 - 2:42 PMgood thoughts. Maybe I will try to re-work my fire hooping technique a bit and see if that makes a difference.
thanks! -

Re: 100psi for fast breaks?
Tue, July 21, 2009 - 4:47 PMI have good luck with my Cosmic Fire Magic Fire Hoop Pro. They use HDPE rather than regular tube. It's lighter and stiffer than 100psi so the hoop is super light and nicely stiff. I love it. I think mine ways in at almost exactly 1 lb. The other thing I love about the Cosmic Fire Hoops is that they're fairly affordable compared to a lot of the other hoops on the market. I made my first 3 firehoops but after purchasing them now, I won't bother making another.
This is what I have:

Re: 100psi for fast breaks?
Wed, July 22, 2009 - 10:19 AMCool, That's really light! It seems that 100psi (regular tubing) fire hoops START at about 1lb before attaching the wicks.
I actually have some of the 3/4" HDPE tubing laying around for making LED hoops. For some reason I never thought to try it for a fire hoop:-p I might just have to give that a try.

Wed, July 22, 2009 - 11:40 AMdoes anyone know how long the flames last with 1" wicks on the Cosmic Fire Hoops?

Re: 100psi for fast breaks?
Wed, July 22, 2009 - 12:34 PMthat's good to know rich! because i had read various things people said about lighter fire hoops being too flimsy, and i've been planning on getting that hoop for ages (prolly with the bigger wicks) so i was disappointed to to think that their light hoop was one of those. glad to hear it's not! and you're right. so affordable. i paid way more for the beast (my despised heavy firehoop) so affordable, and i've been talking about it since it came out, had "definite" plans to get it once the snow melted, but something keeps coming up. grrr.... someday *sigh* -

Re: 100psi for fast breaks?
Thu, July 23, 2009 - 9:40 AMI would say that my hoop is slightly springier than 160 psi hoop but because it's lighter, it doesn't deform as much. I do approach my fastest breaks with a bit of caution but overall it's much better for me because changing direction with a lighter hoop is inherently easier.
I have the 1" wicks. They burn out fast with pure white gas, 2:00 minutes. I've switched over to 50/50 and it's working well. I get 3-4 minutes of burn with 50/50. I like the 1" wick with the shortest stands they make. I'm a weight whore though. I'm willing to sacrifice flame size for a lighter hoop.
