Fire Hooping Newbie

Hi All,
I'm new to hooping and I would like to learn to fire hoop. (It looks awesome!!) I have a couple of questions for anyone that feel like answering them.

First, like I said, I'm new to hooping, is the weight significantly different with a fire hoop (balance wise)?

Is the weight transition very awkward (from no fire hoop to fire hoop)?

When purchasing a fire hoop, should it be the same size as my regular hoop?

I know I will have to practice a great deal with a fire hoop before lighting it and I want to be able to be decent with it by October. Would it best to get it now (so I can alternate practicing with the fire hoop and the regular hoop) or should I wait and practice with my regular hoop a little longer first? (I know this is relative but personal experiences would be very helpful in regards to this question.)

Thanks much for your help.
G-Nee

Super Wickit?

My mom asked me what I wanted for my birthday this year- and I really want both a fire hoop, and an LED hoop. I'd feel pretty silly asking for both for one present, and I can't really spring for one on my own. So then I found the Super Wicket. I've searched all over this tribe- maybe I'm blind, but I can't seem to find a review for this hoop by SuperHooper.org?

Does anyone have one? Do you like it? Can you tell me about it? I'd **love** to be able to hoop with fire, but also be able to take the spines off and go clubbing when I want to. Is this hoop really OK to do that? Is it durable? Should I just choose one or the other and fuggedabboutit?

Thanks Hooping friends! :>

So I just lit up my fire hoop for the first time the other night and freaked out! I guess I kind of forgot how much I am not comfortable with fire. It seemed so close to me...like the flames were going to jump out and grab me...or burn my hands as I was holding the hoop. I tried with one wick lit but it was still panic inducing. I really want to do this but it is proving a lot more difficult than I thought. How easy is it to get burned? Does anyone have any advice? Help!

spokes/spines breaking

So sad, I bought a fire hoop and over the last 6 months - I have had 7 spokes/spines snap. I don't want to go into the particulars here, except in my humble opinion (and that of a couple of engineer friends of mine) is that there is a flaw with the design. Need to have a firehoop that I can count on for upcoming events.
I am not rough and abusive but have been known to loose my grip from time to time and hoop flies, nothing out of the ordinary at all - still the wicks end up flying off - danger Will Robinson - danger indeed.
So, tell me what spoke/spine set ups you all enjoy and count on. Need to resolve this issue soon!

Indy fire arts - spin jam every first and third sunday

Just wanting to find out if anybody is in the indianapolis area interested in this. went last night and had some fire staff and poi but no fire hoops. i really want to try one out before i invest in making one cuz cash is low right now anyway.

Re: Spin Jams at White River every 1st and 3rd Sunday of the Month
UPDATE:

We have decided to hold spin jams on the first and third sunday of every month. Location is the white river state park, at the end of the canal, near the art bridge to the zoo, in the clearing of the horseshoe shaped, limestone beset amphitheater that overlooks the white river. Or just follow the sound of the drums.... that can work too. We begin about half an hour or so before sunset, and continue for an undetermined amount of time... (this changes every spin jam) but generally we are there for at least two hours or more....

Everyone is welcome, even those who have never been exposed to something like this. SO! Bring out your toys n fuel, your drums, something to sit on (if you dont want to sit on stone or grass) and play with us. Don't forget your smiles, either. Oh, and something to drink... thats generally important, too.

Remember, first and third sunday of each month, about sunset, till the fires go out. Hope to see y'all there.

(yes, I said y'all.... dont hold that against me)

Hey guys,
I'm somewhat new to fire-hooping, but I'm already addicted to it. I live in Sarasota, and have found some people to hoop and fire hoop with here, but in a couple weeks I'll be doing an internship in the Keys for a month. I really really want to bring my fire hoop, but I don't feel that I'm an experienced enough burner to burn on my own, or with only a safety who has no idea what he or she is doing.
So, are any of you in the area? Even in the Miami area? Know any beaches where burning is allowed?

Super Heavy Fire Hoop!!

I just built my very first fire hoop!! :) I haven't had the chance to try it out on fire yet, but soon I hope.
I wasn't really going off any particular design (I basically put big 8.5" carriage bolts through the tubing and secured them with epoxy, and put wics on the end of those). The epoxy seems to be quite sturdy, my only issue is that because of the thickness of the carriage bolts I chose, the hoop came out SUPER HEAVY. I've nick-named it The Beast.
I'm not quite sure how I'm going to do anything but waist hoop with it... It refuses to even stay up around my knees. Has anyone ever used an incredibly heavy fire hoop (or normal hoop) before? Is it a matter of practice, or is it always just going to be tricky?

Recommended Tricks for New Fire Hoopers

Hi Beautiful Fire Hoopers!

I've just started fire hooping, and I'm wondering what tricks you would recommend. I know there are some moves that should not be attempted with a fire hoop (I read a list of these in a previous thread). But I'm hoping you can tell me which tricks are great ones for fire hooping. I think the 'float up' and continuous float up/ float down tricks looks good. Obviously, waist and leg hooping works well with fire. I attempted some off body movements last night, but the fire was a little too close for comfort for me. Specifically, I was trying to get the hoop from an isolation back to my waist and had a nerve-wracking moment.

So, I'm wondering if you could recommend a few tricks to start off with. Which ones work well with fire?

Hey everyone,

I am in the process of buying a fire hoop and I want to make sure that I get the right one for me. The most important feature for me is weight. I have a neck problem and my current fire hoop is just becoming too painful to use. I was looking at the spinsterz new, lighter fire hoop and it looks great. Anyone have one, seen one, hooped with one? I'd love to know what you think of it.

Happy Hooping :-)

Build your own Fire Hoop

I am offering a "build your own fire hoop" option on my website http://www.thespinsterz.com/build_a_hoop.htm and I wanted to get your opinion on the ease of use, feel and look of it.

Does it make sense?
Are there too many options?
Do you think a newbie hooper will be able to select what they want?
overwhelming?
or just right and awesome!?
Price?

thanks for your time,
Brandon

Where to fire hoop,,,,and permits?

Just wondering where you guys light up. I live in the city in a uber strict gated community. Plus I live next door to the president of the Home Owners Association. I am afraid to hoop here because I don't even know if its legal. I've heard people talk about permits for their hoops. I tried looking up the city (Shreveport, LA) code. There is lots on burning, and it talks about burning permits, but they are one time permits for burning trash, brush piles, grass etc. There is nothing about fire performance. Any suggestions. What are the rules where you are? Anyone have these permits? So, far the only place I've lit up is at my folks, in the country. I thought about finding some empty parking lot and going for it, but I don't know what the penalty for such things are. Help anyone?

Hi Everybody.. so our fire collective is trying to get organized... and in doing so.. we are wanting to put together a media kit. I have the skills to do so, but I have never put together one before. I was hoping to get some advise and/or some examples of what other conclaves or collectives have done.

Thanks for your help in advance,

Hey guys! Ever caught your hair on fire? I haven't, but I'm wondering just how hard or easy it is to do. For practicing, I wear a beanie. If I'm performing, I usually put it up in two princess Leia style buns.

I've got a photo shoot coming up with the fire hoop and I'd like to wear my hair down, or at least part way down. I should be alright as long as I don't hoop at an angle around my neck and shoulders right??? I've got super long, thin, stick straight hair by the way.....

LA Looks Mega Hold Styling Gel - Fire Proof? A review (yes...another one...I'm a geek)

I read a thread on Tribe mentioning LA Looks gel (mega hold - the green stuff) was tested to be fire proof. Like most...I believe everything I read on the web <snark>, so I set up my lab in the kitchen just to be sure.

Equiptment:
One large sink with bowl of water
Three feathers (my unwitting victims)
A bottle of LA Looks Mega hold gel - the 20 oz bottle (an "X-treme Value"! - I *love* marketing - I mean it's a HUGE bottle! Who could use this much gel?)
A regular aim-n-flame type lighter
A torch like cigar lighter

Experiment #1: Take feather #1, apply regular lighter.
Result: Quickly douse blazing feather in water. Open windows and doors...pull fan out and set to high. Inwardly wish burning feather smelled as good a burning hair.

Experiment #2: Take feather #2, apply copious amounts of LA Mega Hold gel. "Squeegee" off extra with fingers. Before gel "dries", apply regular lighter...then torch lighter
Result with regular lighter: No burning. Apply heat in one spot for 2 seconds...no burning
Result with torch lighter: No burning. Apply heat in one spot for 2 seconds...popping sounds as if it's starting to burn, but no smoldering or burning.
Take paper towel and run feather through it as if wiping feather...there were some soot marks on the paper towel (at least it looked like soot marks)

Experiment #3: Take feather #3 and repeat experiment #2 but wait for gel to "dry" before applying heat source.
Result with regular lighter: No burning. Apply heat in one spot for 2 seconds...no burning
Result with torch lighter: No burning, but popping sounds. Apply heat in one spot for 2 seconds...edges of feather starts to smolder.
Take paper towel and run feather through it as if wiping feather...there were some soot marks on the paper towel (at least it looked like soot marks)

Hope this helps....

Alright, I THINK I've decided to go with a Spinzsters collapsible flex spine fire hoop.
Now my question is, how big do I want it?
My favorite practice hoops are 35" OD. I love the way they feel and move. But should I be going larger for my fire hoop? I don't want to "outgrow" it as I become more comfortable and desire more speed and agility... but is 36" OD a little too ambitious for a 5'6" beginning fire hooper?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated :)

Fire Hoop Spine Questions: Flexible Verus Rigid and Wicks

Hi All,

We recently came out with a collapsible fire hoop, and I had some spoke/spine questions to ask of you hoop pros.

Our spines are non-flexible, and we ended up going this route because of the customer feedback we have received about the flexible spines currently on the market. Some of the problems were with the spines themslves, and some were with the wick and the way it was wrapped, sewn, or otherwise attached.

We would like to offer a flexible spine at some point, but don't want to get too invested until we get a lot more feedback from hoopers, so here are my questions:

1. How important are flexible spines to you?
2. How would you balance more exposed metal versus a more secure wick? E.g., would you go for a more durable wick if it meant a little more metal?
3. What are you experiences with either flexible or ridig spines?
4. Is spines even the preferred word?
5. How much does weight matter to you?

I have seen a few posts praising flexible spines or saying that they are not necessary. I hope you can offer up some more opinions!

Hello Hoopers!

I have recently started making video tutorials providing detailed instructions and breakdowns for different hoop tricks.

You can find them on my site at:
www.safiredance.blogspot.com

It is a new site so there are still a lot of holes, but bare with my as it grows and develops. It will also hold additional information about hooping, including instructions on hoop construction, terminology, and more. I also take requests for what trick to cover in my tutorials so if there is something you've always wanted to learn let me know and we'll break it down.

Much love and all the best,
~ SaFire ~

Stopping the hoop without getting yourself on fire

Hi,

I just received my spinsterz collapsible fire hoop and I'm very happy with it. Before lighting it up I will practice without fire and meet someone who does a lot of fire play (no fire hooping though).

Now I'm wondering, if you're hooping, for instance waist hooping, how do you stop the hoop/end the hooping in a safe way?
It seems to me that sometimes when I stop it with my hands on the outside of the hoop (both to the side), it can happen that one of these thingies that are on fire could light up my elbow, even if I keep them close to my body. How do you stop hooping when it's on fire?

I'm sorry I have to ask this basic things but there is no one around here who knows shit about hooping let alone fire hooping and as far as I know there are zero fire hooping tutorials online.
(I'd be eternally grateful if one or some of you would put something online telling about all the cautions and also basic fire hooping without putting people or things on fire that aren't supposed to burn.)

Fire Hoop comparisons

Hello hoopers,
I'm looking ahead to buying a fire hoop and burning for the first time this summer.
I'd like to know what you all think of the various fire hoops available.
Easy manipulation and safety are my priorities.
I'm particularly curious about why the Bearclaw hoops are so much less expensive than the others I've seen.
Is it worth the extra cash to buy a collapsible one?
Any excellent/horrible experiences with the various manufacturers or designs?
What would you recommend regarding wick length?

Hoop Convergence April 208 Schedule/Prices

Hoop Convergence April 11 - 16, Carrboro, NC

SCHEDULE (subject to change:-)

Times, arrangements and final teacher details are still being negotiated.
Some classes/activities will be for everyone. There will also be break-out sessions where we divide to meet in smaller groups.

FRIDAY: ARRIVAL

To welcome you to Chapel Hill, NC, we will offer an evening for arrival and orientation. This evening will allow time for a deep breath, casual hooping, nourishing potluck, camp or bunk set-up, meeting other hoopers and orienting for the days ahead.

SATURDAY: THE HOOPING BODY

Saturday will focus on the hoop, our bodies and the relationship and possibilities created between the two.

Circle Up: Saturday we will begin the introduction to the circle with a forum on hoop craft. As the basis of the practice, the hoop, in its varying dimensions, weight, aesthetics, grip and balance affects the experience of hooping. Hoops of differing sizes and weights open new doors for movement possibilities and thus physical, mental and spiritual benefits. There will be time for sharing thoughts on the craft and perhaps make a new hoop.

Movement Workshops: 11 am – 4 pm

Classes on Saturday will focus on foundations, injury prevention (Ariana), flexibility & strength training for hooping (TBA), Handwork (Caroleeena) and compiling a movement inventory (full group activity.)

JAM: Integration time at Town Commons with live music 5 – 9 pm (All ages.)

SUNDAY: COMMUNITY / SHARING & PRESENTING THE DANCE

Sunday’s themes will focus on taking the hoop into the community. We will focus on ways to facilitate hooping in your community, event planning, stylizing the hoop dance and dressing for the occasion.

Circle Up: Annie O, creator of World Hoop Day, will host a morning forum with the assistance of Jewels, creator of Hoops for Haiti and Caroleeena who started the Henrietta Jensen Outreach and Education Project in Jamaica. This will be a great time to envision a community event or social service project for your hometown or a sister community.

Circle Up: In the interest of community, on both local and global levels, Alicat, will host a forum on Sustainability and Hooping. You may be able to educate your community with some of these ideas when you return home for Earth Day.

Weaver St Market Jazz Bruch: 11 am – 1 pm

This is a special spot for us Carrboro hoopers, as Spiral & Jewels began a ritual of getting dressed up and taking bundles of colorful hoops to this space to complement their weekly music events. We believe that this has been a key component to promoting the joy of hooping in Carrboro, NC. This event is free to the public, offers great brunch and beverage options and hosts live music. Great for all ages.

Movement Workshops: 1 – 5 pm

Save some energy because we will be going straight from brunch to workshops for the afternoon. Workshops will feature advanced moves (Stefan of Groovehoops), Street Hooping aka Busking (Revolva), Spinning (Jewels & Spiral) and HoopYoga (TBA.)

Craft: late afternoon/early evening

Sunday evening will feature a crafting, trading and costuming event. Annie Weinhart, of Annieland, will offer a no-sew costume techniques workshop in the late afternoon. This will kick off the costuming and crafting portion of the Convergence. This evening will be an opportunity to create, envision or trade pieces of hoopable clothing or patterns. After much consideration, we don’t believe it will be quite workable to have 30 sewing machines in one room, but we will have a few for easy sew patterns in addition to other fun possibilities. We will let you know how much fabric you need to bring for the workshop. Please begin to collect the fun clothing or chunks of fabric that no longer suit you, but may be passed on or traded.

MONDAY: PERFORMANCE

Monday’s workshops will highlight performance aspects of hoopdance. While not all of us are professional performers, each demonstration for a class, group or community event involve some elements of performance and presentation. Let’s face it, whenever we go out to dance with a hoop, we are on display and are communicating with spectators. Hooping is a form of communication, thus considering these elements of the dance is like honing your conversational skills.

Circle Up: Performance Theories, Tips and Personal Stories

Movement Workshops: 10 – 2

Workshops will feature Choreography (Stefan), Engaging an Audience (TBA), Partner Techniques (Ammon & Marria)

Make-Up Techniques: 4 pm

Christine & Patika will lead us through a workshop on make-up application to highlight our natural beauty prior to a super sweet jam. Professional performers and make-up artists, they will surely host an informative and fun pre-ball party.
Full spectrum of needs to be announced.

JAM: Hoop hop set 7 – Midnight (Final details to come.)

With its bumping bass kicks and lyrical flowetry, Hip Hop has had tremendous influence on some of us Carrboro hoopers. This evening will feature live instrumental hip hop jams for your spinning pleasure. This may also be a time to offer a performance to the circle of hoopdancers. Part of the evening will also be DJ’d with a variety of styles of grooviness.

TUESDAY: FIRE

Circle Up: Alicat will facilitate a forum to Compare/Contrast Fire Hoop Designs Safety. Several fire hoop designers will be present to show their fire hoops and tell stories of their creation. Ali will introduce other designs (for some not present) and discuss the differences, advantages, disadvantages, etc. You will also leave the Convergence with an extensive safety packet compiled by Caroleeena.

Craft: After viewing a variety of fire hoop designs and meeting some crafters, we will offer this time for a hands’ on experience of fire hoop craft. This will be a collaborative project as creating a fire hoop is a labor intensive endeavor. We hope to introduce materials, tools, techniques for wick wrapping and complete one hoop to christen during the evening burn!

Movement Workshops: Afternoon

Workshops will feature Fire Hoop practice, Twin Hooping (Jewels & Spiral), HoopYoga (TBA), More (TBA)

Fire: After Dark

Fire Dancing and Drumming~ Gathering around a fire is a sacred, traditional ritual. As humans, we have lost some of our connection with fire in modern times and thus lost respect for its tremendous power of sustaining, transformation and healing. Fire is a powerful element with powers of creation and destruction. We will offer time to initiate, perform and share fire dancing experiences to burn away that which we no longer need and send prayers, hopes and wishes for the future through this dance. We hope this evening will be fiery, fun and ritualistic as we channel our Shiva energies. Incredible rhythms provided.

WEDNESDAY: HEALING HOOP DANCE

Wednesdays themes will focus on Cultivating Creativity, Nurturing Spirit, Healing Potentials of Hoopdance, Working with Special Populations and Social Outreach.

Circle Up: Hooping as Healing Art and Social Service

Writing Your Hoopdance (Revolva), Hooping as Sacred Movement (Jewels), Hooping with Special Populations (Ariana & Laura), Hooping & The Chakras (Tracey), More TBA

Closing ceremonies TBA

We are also including some business and teaching information. Some info will be included in the orientation packet for you. Circle Ups on these topics TBA. More details are being finalized everyday. Stay tuned for teacher bios and more details on events.

REGISTRATION
Full event, five days = $350 (This includes all workshops, jams, forums)
Three days = $250
Day passes = $95
Class or event passes will be released as times are confirmed and may vary depending upon the event. Some events will be free and open to the public.

Music to firehoop too... Need a song by Saturday!!!!

Hey guys! Just wondering if anyone had any song recommendations for a performance on Saturday. I'll be hooping with a partner(not partner hoop, two firehoopers) and she put me in charge of music. I usually firehoop to psytrance, but she hates psytrance and wants something that is not super super fast. She actually hates most electronic music, but says she will be okay with it as long as it's not too fast.

Ideally the song would have a long dramatic intro building up to a beat giving time to light the wicks and play around before we start hooping when the beat kicks in. I've used the song "Silence" by Delerium(the original, not the remix) several times as it fits this criteria.

I'm sick of it though. I want something new. Any suggestions?

Thanks guys...

In order to make a better decision as to buying a fire hoop now or later: Where lies the danger in fire hooping? Can you make 'mistakes' while fire hooping or does a fire hoop falling down mean putting the hooper in fire?
Overview: The Fire Performance Safety Advisory Committee, a committee commissioned by the Greater LA Fire Performance Community has completed the proposed Fire Safety Standards and Implementation Guidelines. These documents will be presented to the Fire Marshals on January 17, 2008. The purpose of this meeting is to review the proposed safety standards with the greater community

The Advisory Committee has invited Captain Anthony Penn and Deputy State Fire Marshal Al Adams (http://www.film.ca.gov/LocationResources/FilmSafety.html) as guest speakers to discuss the importance of implementing a standardized set of safety guidelines and education efforts within our community.

Why Should I Participate? This is the single most important issue facing the greater Los Angeles Fire Performance Community. Every fire arts performer, troupe and production company performing in Los Angeles County will be governed by these safety standards. Please make every effort to ensure that every member of your troupe attends. Sending a delegate should only be considered a last resort.

Hi... I know there has been lots of reviews here about other Fire Hoops manufactuors products, but I am, wanting opinions of Trick Concept's fire hoops, from http://www.fire.trickconcepts.com/hoop.htm.

From all the fire hoops I have seen thes appear to be the nicest in design and weight, so does anybody have any opinions on these?

Thanks,
Rebecca

Still flying high and have to share!

At five months pregnant I pulled off my first fire hoop performance last night! I didn't think I could hoop, didn't think I could handle any fumes, and honestly wasn't sure how much I could even dance.

But as soon as that hoop was lit...it was all over. The crowd loved it!

And I have to say, all the posts, pictures and videos I've found here have been a major source of inspiration and motivation for me. Thanks everyone! Happy new year!

First National Hooper's Conference!!!

Hoop Convergence ~ Friday April 11 - Wednesday April 16, 2008

Please join us for the very first national (hopefully International!) Hooper’s Conference -- The Hoop Convergence.

The Hoop Convergence is the bringing together of a wide variety of hoopers from all over the world to create a synergistic learning environment where we will address all aspects of hooping. There will be panel discussions and workshops with a variety of amazing teachers and hoopers from all over the United States.

The Convergence will be held in beautiful the Hooper Haven of Carrboro, NC. Everything in this wonderful town is in walking distance and already many local hoopers are opening their homes or offering camping on their property to visiting hoopers from all over the country. Make plans to join us now.

To learn more, volunteer, make suggestions or arrange for a place to stay, please join the tribe Hoop Convergence at: http://tribes.tribe.net/hoopconvergence

Here are some of the amazing workshops and activities that are confirmed as of right now:

HOOP SKILLS WORKSHOPS
Currently, Spiral, Revolva, Caroleeena and Jewels are all confirmed to teach. These workshops will teach a variety of hooping techniques, including hand work, footwork, bodywork and dance, as well as hooping specialties, such as street performance and twin hooping. There will be workshops appropriate to all skill levels and other classes will be added to the curriculum as they are confirmed. Workshop details are forthcoming.

YOGA, INJURY PREVENTION & HEALING
We will host an injury prevention discussion panel made up of yogis, hoopers, massage therapists and other body/mind workers and healers. Hopefully we will be able to offer a HoopYoga workshop as well.

COSTUME DESIGN and THEATER MAKE-UP WORKSHOPS
In addition to learning costume design and theater make-up, the Convergence will also include a trade circle, a costume swap, sewing and non-sewing methods for making/decorating costumes, pattern shares, and a discussion where we will share ideas about themes, hoopable clothing and info for creating fire safe costumes . If you stay for the entire week, there will be excursions to some kick ass thrift stores too! (Then, after the Convergence, you can try out your new threads at Shakori Hills the following weekend!)

COMMUNITY, SERVICE PROJECTS and WORLD HOOP DAY
There will also be a discussion panel on community building, event planning, service projects and World Hoop Day. Hoopin' Annie O, creator of World Hoop Day, Jewels, who created Hoops for Haiti, and Caroleeena, who started the Henrietta Jensen Outreach and Education Project in Jamaica are all confirmed and will all be available to help you envision and manifest your world hoop day events or community outreach projects. (Hopefully Xta will be able to make it also!)

FIRE
On Saturday night, we will have a drum circle and fire ceremony with fire dancing. If you haven't fire hooped before, this could be your moment! There will also be discussions on Fire Philosophy & Ritual, Safety, Tool Repair, Craft and Professionalism. (There may also be a workshop highlighting a variety of different fire hoops and build techniques. We may not have time amidst everything else to build our own fire hoops, but maybe. If not, I'm sure you can order one from a local crafter to be customized for you and ready for your arrival to NC or to be shipped to you when you return home.)

JAM ~ DANCE PARTY
Sunday night, we will have a funky, dressy, jamming hoop hop set. There will also be a pre-party, house-party for dressing and making up!

OTHER THINGS we hope to include are:
Performances by and for each other
Publicity and Marketing
Business Management and Taxes for Professionals
Teaching Techniques
Hooping with kids
Sharing Poetry and Stories
Hoop Philosophy and Spirituality

Finally, if we can manage it, and if we have enough people at Shakori Hills, I think it would be fun to try to choreograph and premier the world’s largest choreographed hoop dance! I know they would let us do it there. We just have to see if we can make it happen!

We have lots of other ideas too – Circus hooping, Native American Hoop Dance, Rhythmic Gymanastics, Hoop Yoga, integrating specific types of dance into hooping, and more – but those things may have to wait until next year … unless you know someone willing and/or able to teach! If you have an idea for a workshop, please join the Hoop Convergence Tribe and share it with us! http://tribes.tribe.net/hoopconvergence

If you would like to teach or lead a discussion panel, please post that on the Hoop Convergence tribe too or feel free to PM a description to Jewels at hoopflow@gmail.com. We will accommodate what we can given space availability and group sizes. Teaching or leading a panel will enable you to attend other workshops for free. Depending on our turnout, you will hopefully also receive compensation for your efforts. (We are still working out the estimated costs for this event but we are working to keep them reasonable. Several teachers are volunteering altogether.)

Prices and other details will follow soon. New items are being added everyday!

If you can stay through the week, festivities, workshops, discussion panels and field trips will be offered Friday through Wednesday. Then, on Thursday, we'll head over to Silk Hope for a great, family-friendly, hooper-rich, inexpensive local music festival with incredibly sweet vibes through the following Sunday!

If you can't stay through the week and for the music festival, there will be plenty of hoopy goodness happening during the weekend from Fri - Sun/Mon. Do try to stay Sunday night for a big jam and costuming pre-party though!

For more information about the Shakori Hills Grassroots Festival of Peace and Dance (April 17 - 20, 2008), go to: www.shakorihills.org

Again, if you are willing and able to participate in any way, please do! Your input and expertise are essential. So please join the Hoop Convergence tribe today. We hoopfully hope to hoop with you soon!
And are there any dvds or videos that teach intermediate to advanced hooping moves?
I do fire hooping, so a lot of the off moves that I can do I can't do while performing (like the rolling across shoulders/chest one)
Just trying to expand my skill!

Or if you live in MO maybe we could get together and make one i donno. Lemme know!

Much love fellow fire hoopers!

Double fire hooping

Hey Hoopers!

I've been exploring hooping with two fire hoops a little bit and am looking for stories, advice, and inspiration. I love the idea of it, and love little moments that I've had in the flow. What I'm not sure about yet is how to keep the wicks from the one hoop from crossing over into the other and tangling the two. How do folks handle this? Is it simply that I need to improve my skills at keeping the two separated at all times? Is that what's necessary? Or are there construction methods that help? I've used two that each are the same diameter and weight, with four small compact cathedral wicks each. I'm thinking about building my own sometime in the next week. Recommendations?

Thanks in advance for your feedback!

SAVE THE DATE! HP Retreat set for 6/26- 6/29, 2008!

Save the Date!

We wanted to give everyone advance notice of this amazing event. Last year, we were only able to give two months notice, and we had some hoopers who were not able to come. We had such a good time last year, that we hope that this notice comes early enough that all who would like to come, can make it.

The 2nd Annual National Hoop Path Retreat dates are now set for June 26- June 29th, 2008. We decided to bump up the dates from July so that we do not conflict with Transformus, or the heat of July's southern Sun.

We will follow the same schedule as last year, but will offer an additional beginner set of workshops (three day intensive) immediately preceding the Intermediate/Advanced Workshops each of the three days.

We will provide you with all the details and the full schedule very soon.

If you're too curious to wait, here are some links to last year's event. These are just to give everyone and idea of what this event is like. Please keep in mind that these posts are about last year's retreat.

i fire hooped at a drum circle this past weekend, and was very dissapointed with my work. when i hoop dance sans fire, i move around a lot, and since i had so much room at the drum circle, i thought i'd do the same with the fire hoop. i got so disoriented! i felt lost! i tried to slow down every once and a while to get my bearings, but knew i could've done so much better. i'm thinking maybe just stay in one spot more, and do my performance toward one side so i don't get lost...i've danced all my life and know how to spot, but the fire is so distracting, you know? usually i spin fire in my backyard so i have landmarks, and this was a whole new experience.
firehoopers, guide me here! light my way!

The topic of a full ring hoop has been batted around, but we finally got footage of the darn thing last night. Here's Lady Lava performing with the Sunhoop Ring at Knotts Scary Farms here in Orange County, CA.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0pNW1edsqrs

Tangee is the only person to master this thing so far. It's a freak load of fire, yes, but more importantly, when you close a ring of fire strange convection currents appear. So, if you spot her hair rising, that's from the updraft flowing through the hoop (even while spinning). Also, this thing cannot be put out with towels (except for a crapload of them), so that's why we grab the extinguishers.

And finally, this video doesn't do it justice. This is my most favorite invention, combining the beauty of snakes and hoops plus giving the illusion that the internal hoop doesn't exist. It's breathtakingly beautiful, and I'm working on ways to make it shippable again.

I don't know if that would be an appropriate title, lol, but I need some help with leg hooping.
I have been having a lot of problems with it.

Whenever I try leg hooping it sinks to right above my knee, which bruises easily.
How do I get it to not sink so low?
AND
How so I get the hoop to go back up to my hips/waist?

Anyone else ever try a hoop covered in leather? I love grippy tape, and this is the best I've found. I've also used cork road bike handlebar tape which is also good. Leather is durable, grippy and I love how a leather hoop feels like a valuable custom tool.

I've been leathering my practice hoops and my fire hoops for a couple months now. I'll go buy a used leather skirt from good will, cut it into 1" strips then wrap my hoop using 3M spray adhesive. I like the suede side of the leather.

Thin leather works best as heavy leather can add a lot of weight if you're not careful. My favorite leather hoops are just slightly heavier than a normal hoop.

Does anyone have a picture of a Holistic fire hoop?
(Just the hoop, not it in action)

Otherwise, does anyone know where to get colorful grip tapes and regular tape for a hoop? Also ones that are shiny and nice and cool haha.

Question: Why when the hoop moves are you less likely to burn yourself?

I have been asked to fire hoop on Childrens TV programme in the UK. I have told them that it is very unlikely for you to burn yourself when the hoop is moving as the flame is less fierce, obviously you can burn your self on the forarms unless they are protected once you start on off body stuff. Why is the flame less fierce? I know it seems a silly question, it is something to do with the oxegen and the movement, but can anyone give me a really good answer that is correct to the law of physics (?) so that I can look very clever if asked?

I love you all, amazing hooping and fire hooping people all over the world :)

I keep burning my inner arm... help!

I have been fortunate and have had very few fire hoop burns, but I keep burning the same place. 30% of the time I do a behind the back pass with my fire hoop I graze my inner arm with my thread rod spokes which tends to give me small, and funny looking burns. Luckly it only stings for a minute, and none have been sever. It's more of a nusiance at this point and I'd like to prevent getting a more serious burn. I probably should practice the move more and not touch the spokes at all, but no ones perfect. I have spent hours online looking for brown soft leather lace up armbands which I could tie on the top of my arm as to protect this delicate inner arm area. I am not having much luck. Does anyone know where to buy these or have any suggestions for proteting the inner arm, between the wrist and elbow.

I prefer not to wear long sleeves, as it is far more difficult for me to do arm moves. The hoop tends to slip and the last thing I want to do is launch flamming steel at someone.

fire hoops - safest and best?

I think I am ready to fire hoop. I am looking to you good peeps to help me find the best fire hoop for the money. I'm a petite female who usually dances with a 3/4 inch 100 PSI hoop though I can dance for hours so I think stamina and weight won't be an issue. I just want something safe and sturdy.

Suggestions? I can't really go over $200 USD, either...

thank you!

A fire is a dangerous flames which causes accidents when it is not used in a proper way. When such type of accidents are happened, it can be cured using fire alarm system is an active fire protection system that detects fire or the effects of fire. Fire alarm systems includes alarm notification appliances, alarm initiating devices, power supplies and wiring. Fire protection is the prevention and reduction of hazards associated with fires. The owners and operators are responsible to maintain their facitilities in land-based, offshore or evenships for the fire accidents.
To ensure fire safety of buildings, all building products, materials and furnishings must be tested for fire resistance, and researched so it causes no harm.Fire Protection Publications (FPP) and the International Fire Service Training Association (IFSTA) has started a fire service training manual called 'Essentials of fire fightings'. In this training manual you can learn more about how to fight fire.

psi rating and hooping - 100psi and fire

For all you old timers out there. I'm fairly new to hooping and I am very inspired. I've been loving my 3/4" 160psi play hoops and came up with a design easy enough for me to make a fire hoop. After 3 versions I am very happy with my design. I don't know the weight of my hoop but I was wondering if using 100 psi for a fire hoop to make my design lighter would affect the integrity. I've heard mumblings about fire hoops not staying true if you go lighter. Any thoughts before I end up with MORE irrigation tubing in my back yard? I've got so many "test" hoops that I look like a hoop dealer. Too funny because I work with one for a while then change the size and fall in love with the new one, never touching the one before. Evolution of a hooper I guess...

Hello everybody, I just released version 2 of The Spinsterz collapsible fire hoop and one of the high points is that it is now a little over 10oz lighter. Total weight comes to 2.2 pounds.

I am wondering how much your fire hoop weighs?
Is it collapsible?

My ultimate goal is to make the lightest weight collapsible fire hoop there is, but I need to know what the current benchmark is.

Decision to do firehooping

I suppose most so not all of you started by 'regular' hooping first and later on started firehooping, right?
So how did you decide it was time for the firehoop, what were the conditions, considerations etc?

Me personally I do not firehoop yet, just normal hooping, since April but I'd sure like to do firehooping once I think I'm good enough. When that exactly is I don't know, I estimate it will be in some months, maybe half a year time. Maybe I am good enough but I sort of see the firehoop as a hoop for advanced hoopers, and like to keep it that way, so I can think of it as another goal to reach, another level. So when I consider myself advanced I'd probably buy + try one! (Since I finally got myself able to get the hoop from the knees to the waist with the shimmy up trick I almost consider myself intermediate. Now there are only a few little parts of my body that should keep the hoop up in order for me to consider myself intermediate.)

so I got my wonderful beautiful perfect (Holistic)Firehoop JUST in time for Burning Man, and now I'm trying to figure out what I can and can't do with it. Since I just got it on Thursday, I have yet to light it but I'm working on moves I'll feel comfortable with. I'm a pretty good hooper, but try to learn at least one new trick a week. What are your favorite moves for flaming hoopage? Any tips or tricks you experienced fire-flys can bestow on an excited newbie?

Hello fellow hoopers,

I recently purchased a collapsible fire hoop from Spintzers and am wondering if anyone else has had similar problems with this hoop. I've found it unnecessarily heavy and stiff. It has caused some significant bruising on my legs and I have difficulty hooping at my kneck without being in pain.

Does anyone know of another brand of fire hoop that will not have these issues?

Thanks,
Sandra

(I've checked the archives and I'm still confused)

So you jam a Tnut through the inner side of the tubing, then put threaded rod through tubing (from outer side to inner side) and screw into Tnut. Got it.

And...then...hope it doesn't unscrew while hooping? Fill it with glue? Some fancy trick?

New Fire Hoop: Spines possibley too long- advice on moves and modification?

I've just purchased a fire hoop which is absolutely beautiful and very well made. However, I feel that it might be a bit too big!

I think the spines are too long and are limiting what I would be comfortable in doing. I only got in on saturday and have burned up 3 times. Each time getting a little more daring but not much! I've just been out in the garden having a quick un-lit practice and I am really starting to get used to the hoop now. The questions are...

a) stick with it for a bit and see what happens with a brand new hoop and learn about my spaces more and get used to weight
b) ask the maker if the spines are threaded all the way inside and have them chopped down?
c) Go ahead and modify it myself? (Chop the tube down slightly and chop the spines...)

What's the ettiquette? Is it impolite to ask someone who made you something if you can modify it? (Even if I paid for it?)

Anyone have advice on moves for a hoop with long spines? Its soooo heavy too but I can get used to that as I get stronger I guess. I look at the fire hooping videos and the hoops appear to be as light as a feather!

Thanks x

I know someone on here can help me! I've contacted the company that I purchased it from and I haven't heard anything back and I've got a performance July 4th weekend!! I'm kinda freaking out!!!

Problem:
Whatever the nut-bolt mechanism that holds the spokes in tightly has broken. The part on the inside of the hoop that keeps the spoke sturdy, has come loose and is now rattling inside the hoop. It has happened on 3 of the holes...these parts must be replaceable!! Can I purchase them at any hardware store?
Replying back here or via email would be great!!!! I'd love it sooo much!! =) <3

Last night as I was driving home from yoga, I looked out my window and saw a gorgeous, full Moon shining down on me...so beautiful! I wanted to spin my fire hoop, but it was late and I didn't have a safety. I'm going to spin tonight, and add my light to the Moonlight. Anyone else have an urge to spin on the full Moon?

Ok, it's boring and simple, but I'm not kid and I was playing it very safe (besides, my body doesn't move that way anymore - not yet anyway!!) But I did it!! Pretty cool for a Grandma with a lifelong fear of fire!

Commercializing hooping

So we all know how powerful a talented hooper dancing with a hoop can be- the experience can be beautiful, mesmerizing and like seeing a live a sensual art form. I'm used to seeing hoopers at Burning Man and other festivals from people who are for garnering creativity, expression and art... now I see a TON of companies taking hooping out there and selling it as a fitness regime. What was once something special and sacred has now become mainstream and packaged for the public....

Thoughts??

Help! For those who make hoops

Any suggestions on getting the connector all the way into the tubing after it is cooled? I just got my new fire hoop and not all of the connectors are in fully, leaving a small space between the pieces. My hair dryer doesn't do it - maybe not hot enough and I found out when making non fire hoops that boiling water will distort the connector so can use that! Any suggestions? I am itching to try this hoop out!

YEAH! First fire hoop performance burned down the house!

I did it! I was so nervous and a bit uncomfortable at first...but once I started hooping it was fantastic! I even got a barrel roll into it...and passed on the step through (save a little something for next time ;-). So many friends gave their support. One of the best parts was a stranger from audience coming up to me afterwards and saying "You were great!". THANK YOU strange man! You made me feel wonderful.

I feel so liberated. I don't think anyone got it on tape...but if I find it out there...I'll post it.

I just wanted to gush a little! And say thanks. It couldn't have been done without help from so many people...

Thank you Terri for herding cats and getting all of us together and committed to this project. So many people contributed...supporters, safeties, helpers, drummers, the hoop community, drummers, “politicians”, and of course, the other talented fire performers.

Special Thanks to:
Anah - who inspired me to start hooping
Kandice for my fire hoop <which I LOVE and reviewed on this tribe> and a good long chat about fuel and performance (http://holistichooping.com)
Glitter Girl for the straight dope on fire hooping (www.templeofpoi.com)
HoopGirl for lessons (hoopgirl.com)
Tedward (http://www.bearclawmfg.com/) for taking the time to talk about bio-fuels...your coloured fuel experiment will happen this weekend!

and of course...Nanette for giving me my first fire safety lesson and lighting me up for the first time! (http://hoopgirl.com/index.php?pt=info&id=3&hdr=performances)

...and all of you who helped me (directly or indirectly) with costume advice, hooping how-tos, vids, and general inspiration!

What: Temple of Poi Fire Dancing Expo
Details: http://www.templeofpoi.com/events/expo07.php
Where: Union Square (Geary and Post)
When: April 29, 2007 at 7:50 pm
Cost: Free!!

Bring a chair and a blanket and join us April 29, 2007 at 7:50 pm for our
free fire dancing show in San Francisco's legendary Union Square (Geary and
Post) for the second annual Temple of Poi Fire Dancing Expo. In addition to
some amazing student performances, this show features world-renowned
performers from around the US as well as some of the best artists around the
Bay Area in a 2 hour show hosted by a Chicago based comedian.

The creation of this event – selected as one of Bay Area Dance week’s
Cornerstone events – is a tremendous leap in the efforts to legitimize fire
dancing as an art form by taking it out of parking lots and putting it on
landmark stages like Union Square. The Expo celebrates safe, legally
permitted, public fire dancing performance in honor of National Dance Week,
an annual 10-day week of free public dance events in the Bay Area designed
to showcase the dynamic diversity and critically acclaimed quality of Bay
Area dance.

Temple of Poi supports this vision by creating an unprecedented opportunity
to celebrate fire dancing at no cost to the artists or audience. This event
is a not for profit event created with the intention of:

- offering more performance opportunities for fire dancers
- giving novice artists who might otherwise not have an opportunity to
perform in a public setting an opportunity where they can invite friends and
family to see them express their art
- increased exposure to the flow fire art forms by creating a legally
permitted public event at a San Francisco landmark location
- raise the awareness of fire dancing as a prestigious dance form by holding
this event on the opening night of National Dance Week

Our Mistress of Ceremonies for the evening is the lovely and talented Miss
Tamale (http://misstamale.com) -- a former Temple of Poi student, fire
dancer and comedian who flew out from Chicago to help celebrate this event.

I did my first public performance today! Talk about a major rush, I am so stoked! This was on the second time I used my Spinsterz Fire hoop, so I only used 4 wicks instead of 6 for my own security. It was so fun, I think I am officially addicted!
