Digging through old posts gets tiresome after a while (especially when you get distracted by shiny threads on other topics!), so I'll ask here, if there's already a thread you know on it, I'd appreciate any linkage!

I want to build my own fire/LED hoop, and have LOTS of research to do before it gets started. Since it will be LED, it will need to use a translucent material, and since it will be fire, it will need to stand up to the weight stress, and the heat. I'm hoping to use mid-length removable spokes (or maybe even short ones, especially for smaller hand hoops or doing off-body fire hooping, which I will do a lot of, so shorter is better there). As I'm 6'1", I'll likely use a 40"+ hoop. With LEDs and batteries, I'll need to use at least a 1" diameter tube (thinner would likely be difficult to fit everything inside, including the spoke hardware). I'm sure weight will get to be an issue with both LEDs/Batteries and wicks and a 1" thick 40"+ hoop, so if I can avoid a tape job and use a more "grippy" hoop material, that would be helpful too. I'm not sure what fuels I would be using yet, though I know I'll want to do either something with a longer burn time, or colored fuels (maybe both some day if possible), so I'm not sure how much heat the spokes will produce.

So, with all this in mind (and knowing I'll never be able to get something that meets everything I want, and I may have to sacrifice weight, or something else), what tubing would you recommend?

Originally I was going to purchase http://www.usplastic.com/catalog/variant.asp?catalog_name=USPlastic&category_name=120&product_id=7832&variant_id=58008 (recommended many places for LED hoops, and I've used some made with it which were very nice), but none of those I looked at took fire into consideration. The fact this is only 110PSI is good for lightness, but may not stand up to the weight of the hardware (and with a big hoop and fast off-body hooping, I've snapped PVC connectors and had huge hoop distortion on heavier material WITHOUT the added wick weight).

LDPE vs HDPE? L is lighter and weaker, while H is heavier and more durable, is there enough of a difference to care?
Is a higher PSI better for holding its shape while adding weight to an already heavy hoop? Would 110 work fine for this application, would 160 be WAY too heavy?

I could probably ask 100 more questions, but I won't! And I hope someone out there has answers to this, as if I had the time and money, I would gladly try out multiple combination to put these answers out there for other people :)

After I know THIS part, the next step is figuring out how to mount removable spoke hardware (with the added bonus of having to consider the LED string on the inside!) But that is a topic for another post!

I then unscrewed the threaded inserts from my Spinsterz hoop and screwed them into my new hoop....voila, new fire hoop. I also used the same spokes from my Spinsterz hoop. I'm relly stoked b/c I've been wanting a smaller, lighter fire hoop but am unemployed at the moment and could not afford a new one. First burn is tonight....Merry Christmas!

I am absolutely happy with the construction of the hoop but I am having trouble with getting the flames right, they are too big and too hot (Like melt my precious hoop hot). I reduced the amount of fuel I put on each wick, but then I get some wicks that just don't burn the whole way through. It rocks when I just do three because I get huge whooshing fire trails. But I want more than three.
I think maybe I should have five spines. At 2X2X2 are my wicks too big? I am using straight white gas. Is that a problem? I've been looking for lamp oil to mix 50/50, would that help? How much, and how to do apply your fuel? How long do you wait before lighting the wicks? Any other tips for me?

oy.... so for quite a while i've been wanting to do a night time jam. but the city of rochester seems determined not to allow any kind of happy dancey music event in their parks.

i sent a message to a guy who runs a drum circle in town. i would love love love for there to be some live drumming. but all the parks have rules against music that travels more than 50 feet. but i did some clicking around and found out who i should get in touch with for a restricted use permit. i feel like getting around the music thing is the easy part.

the difficult part is the fire spinning. the parks have rules stating you can't kindle a fire except in the provided fire pits. i think by kindle they're implying that they don't want you to build a fire on the ground. like any old where, burning huge circles into the grass... i'm obviously not going to do that. but im afraid our misc spinning will be ended by some kind of authority figure using that rule against us.

i had spent some (confusing) time a while back reading to see what i could come up with to defend our activities. i'm struggling how to word this! i'm looking for a law/regulation to make the distinction between our fire spinning and the park rules against kindling a fire outside a fire pit. i had started my reading one day on nafaa.org, ended up reading some complicated laws i didnt fully grasp at the time. some kind of regulation about fire performance/rehearsal being different than building a fire in the park. so that if a park employee or police officer came and said that was against park rules, i would be able to give them some other rules that prove that what we're doing is completely different and not really applicable. does that make sense?

i realize that's not fool proof, and they could still tell us not to spin fire, but i think that's probably my best chance. what do you guys think?

i had been tossing this idea around for a while, and when i first started reading on nafaa i wasn't ready to get serious yet. it might be difficult (if not impossible) to organize this kind of event in rochester ny, but i'm not ready to give up yet! i'm going to read more seriously on nafaa, but is there somewhere else i can study? anyone have a similar experience that can offer me any advice?

However, I live in a large apartment building and don't think it would be wise to store fire toys in my building. So I am wondering to those of you that have this same situation - where do you store your fire toys? Is it safe to keep toys and fuel in the trunk of my car? Or do I need to find someone who will let me use their garage?

Hi everyone!
My Spinsterz hoop is lighter than my Iron Gypsy. Shakti's super-light fire hoop is lighter than the Spinsterz hoop. A really light fire hoop would open all kinds of doors for my dancing. I've thought about making my own, but considering I can hardly assemble my own Ikea furniture, it's probably a very bad idea for me to construct a fire tool. I've taken an unlit spin with Shakti's hoop, but the girl had just bought it and didn't know much about fire dancing or the nature of the flame. I was a little concerned: a) with the spines being so floppy against the plastic, b) the spines getting very hot (i'm not sure what the cable was made of) and c) the lightness of the hoop feeling out of control when it's on fire and d) the wicks being too small for a nice looking flame (I like the fire on the big side, and I am a fast hooper so the fire flickers a lot if the wicks are too small, I have the big wicks for my Spinterz hoop, and they are perfect for me).

If anyone can lend an opinion on this fire hoop, or help me with a, b, c, or d, I'd be ever so appreciative!

I can help you with any sizing questions, so you get the hoop that is best for you. You have a variety of options. You can get any size hoop, you can pick a lighter version or a medium weight version, lots of choice on the colors and design of your hoop, you pick the size of the wicks and the length of the rods. If you are getting a LED version, we can talk about what color LED's you would like. If this seems like too many options and you don't know the answers, then no worries. It's sooo pungent and although the smell itself isn't that offensive to me, it's really strong and wont' get out of my clothes and stuff. I have found that no amount of washing of my hands completely rids myself of the odor, but for some reason it helps a lot when I rub my hands in dirt. I'm getting a different dip can that I hope will help. It's a really sturdy paint/paint thinner plastic container from Home Depot. It's kind of like tupperware on steroids. I keep my wicks in a study ziplock back then wrap them in a couple more plastic grocery bags. They still smell to high heaven so I store them on a top shelf of a pretty unused closet which seems to work fairly well. Any tips? How does everyone else deal with their fire tools and fuels?

Where do you go to spin, not even just hoops, but poi/ect. How do you determine where is a safe place to handle fire, and where isn't? Also where would I go to find information on the cities fire laws, I don't want to light something up and get thrown in jail, haha. I live in Vegas, there is pleanty of desert around me, I've considered going just out of the city limit, but I just don't know.

We've also (finally) come up with the first firehoop design weighing in at less than 1 lb! Crazy I know. Continue to check back. By January we'll have listed a pair of double mini firehoops and (fingers crossed) a new collapsible design. For those of you that have already purchased on of our hoops, you can find a wick replacement set for when the time comes. Order by Wednesday December 17th for a guarantee by Christmas. Much love!

I've been wondering if there's a reason (apart from price) why people don't tend to make metal hoops rather than using plastic tubing?
In my quest for the smallest and lightest of hoops, I've found that there seem to be compelling reasons to try using aluminium tubing - for one thing, I prefer really skinny hoops (the practise hoops I made are 8' of 3/8" 90-psi tubing, and because they're the infinity-sign design they collapse so small they fit in a messenger bag), and when you're getting into hoops that small and thin the irrigation tubing simply isn't sturdy enough to support wicks. I would love to be able to have a hoop that didn't have to be 3/4" in diameter and subsequently be that much heavier than the ones I practise with, but I've never seen a metal fire hoop (though I HAVE used aluminum practise hoops, which are completely awesome).

The only downside I can really see to using aluminium is that I'd have to come up with a different way to collapse them (probably screw-together sections would make the most sense), but I've not made many fire toys so I'd love some input before I start working on my design.

Do any of you fabulous hoop-makers have any experience/experiments with making hoops out of metal that you could share with me?

Do you unscrew all of them and soak them all together in fuel before screwing them back in and lighting up? Or do you just keep them in the hoop and dip them individually? Do you just shake off the excess fuel into the fuel container and whatnot, or do you use a cloth to soak up the extra fuel? If anyone is planning on making a fire hoop video some time in the future, it would be the most fantastic thing if they could have a little intro showing the fuel process before performing. Anyway, just a few concerns about it. Thanks so much!!

I have hooped with hoops larger than this, and they always felt a bit awkward. However, I have yet to dance the sacred spiral dance of fire...

It's really tedious to have to keep dipping the wicks every time they go out and it makes it really tough to practice. Any thoughts.....?

Hello beautiful fire aficionados!

I am an avid hooper and have decided to buy my first fire hoop (yay - so excited!) I wanted to be sure i was really secure in my hooping before purchasing my fire toy, and now I feel ready. My question is regarding spine length. The company I'm ordering my hoop from (http://www.trickconcepts.com/hoops.aspx) has spines available in 3 lengths: 6.5" (165mm), 8.5" (216mm) and 10.5" (267mm) long. I have pretty much ruled out the longest length, but am torn between the short & medium length. My understanding is that the shorter length will give me greater freedom with vertical moves, but it will also be significantly closer to my body. I'm leaning towards the medium, but don't want to regret getting wicks that are too long. I was wondering what everyone's experiences were with different spine lengths and would love any recommendations for my first fire hoop!

Thanks everyone, your thoughts are much appreciated!

Oh, p.s. - I will be ordering the 40" diameter hoop (I think....44" seems really big! But is bigger better with fire?)

I tried Lowes (they have speednuts, but none that big), Home Depot (they don't carry speednuts) Autozone (again, no speednuts), and a few places online. Do speednuts of this size even exist, or am I just going to have to use smaller bolts? What size bolts do you guys normally use? I'm ok with using thinner bolts, but it seems like the thinner ones don't get longer than about 6 inches, (which is about 3 inches once the wick is on and the bolt is going through the hoop) and I'm afraid to have the fire that close to the hoop... both for my comfort and so the tape/ hoop doesn't melt.
Suggestions??

I hadn't fire hooped well in a very long while, and for some reason, it just came back to me at Decompression. I performed this past Sunday at The Tri-Cult Devival (www.devival.com) here in Austin, and it was so much fun!

I've still got a lot of work, I need to get more comfortable with some of the moves I already do, and learn some new ones. But that is less important to me right now than the fact that I am comfortable again, and that I enjoy it WHILE I'm doing it.

I'd feel pretty silly asking for both for one present, and I can't really spring for one on my own. So then I found the Super Wicket. I've searched all over this tribe- maybe I'm blind, but I can't seem to find a review for this hoop by SuperHooper.org?

Does anyone have one? Do you like it? Can you tell me about it? I'd **love** to be able to hoop with fire, but also be able to take the spines off and go clubbing when I want to. Is this hoop really OK to do that? Is it durable? Should I just choose one or the other and fuggedabboutit?

Thanks Hooping friends! :>

I'm new to hooping and I would like to learn to fire hoop. (It looks awesome!!) I have a couple of questions for anyone that feel like answering them.

First, like I said, I'm new to hooping, is the weight significantly different with a fire hoop (balance wise)?

Is the weight transition very awkward (from no fire hoop to fire hoop)?

When purchasing a fire hoop, should it be the same size as my regular hoop?

I know I will have to practice a great deal with a fire hoop before lighting it and I want to be able to be decent with it by October. Would it best to get it now (so I can alternate practicing with the fire hoop and the regular hoop) or should I wait and practice with my regular hoop a little longer first? (I know this is relative but personal experiences would be very helpful in regards to this question.)

Thanks much for your help.
Re: Spin Jams at White River every 1st and 3rd Sunday of the Month
UPDATE:

We have decided to hold spin jams on the first and third sunday of every month. Location is the white river state park, at the end of the canal, near the art bridge to the zoo, in the clearing of the horseshoe shaped, limestone beset amphitheater that overlooks the white river. Or just follow the sound of the drums.... that can work too. We begin about half an hour or so before sunset, and continue for an undetermined amount of time... (this changes every spin jam) but generally we are there for at least two hours or more....

Everyone is welcome, even those who have never been exposed to something like this. SO! Bring out your toys n fuel, your drums, something to sit on (if you dont want to sit on stone or grass) and play with us. Don't forget your smiles, either. Oh, and something to drink... thats generally important, too.

Remember, first and third sunday of each month, about sunset, till the fires go out. Hope to see y'all there.

(yes, I said y'all.... dont hold that against me)
I wasn't really going off any particular design (I basically put big 8.5" carriage bolts through the tubing and secured them with epoxy, and put wics on the end of those). The epoxy seems to be quite sturdy, my only issue is that because of the thickness of the carriage bolts I chose, the hoop came out SUPER HEAVY. I've nick-named it The Beast.
I'm not quite sure how I'm going to do anything but waist hoop with it... It refuses to even stay up around my knees. Has anyone ever used an incredibly heavy fire hoop (or normal hoop) before? Is it a matter of practice, or is it always just going to be tricky?

I've just started fire hooping, and I'm wondering what tricks you would recommend. I know there are some moves that should not be attempted with a fire hoop (I read a list of these in a previous thread). But I'm hoping you can tell me which tricks are great ones for fire hooping. I think the 'float up' and continuous float up/ float down tricks looks good. Obviously, waist and leg hooping works well with fire. I attempted some off body movements last night, but the fire was a little too close for comfort for me. Specifically, I was trying to get the hoop from an isolation back to my waist and had a nerve-wracking moment.

So, I'm wondering if you could recommend a few tricks to start off with. Which ones work well with fire?

Hi Everybody.. so our fire collective is trying to get organized... and in doing so.. we are wanting to put together a media kit. I have the skills to do so, but I have never put together one before. I was hoping to get some advise and/or some examples of what other conclaves or collectives have done.

Thanks for your help in advance,
Rebecca
